All About Board Games: Board Games - Christmas Fun For The ...

Board games seem to flood stores and sites around the Christmas period, or do they? They're always there, but people tend to purchase board games much more at Christmas as they make ideal gifts for your friends and family, but why are they seen as such trusted gifts? The answer lies in the simple fact that board games can be enjoyed again and again, sometimes for years on end. A couple of examples come from my own childhood, actually.

My grandparents had a pair of old board games that would come off the shelves during rainy days or when my younger self had exhausted the other options for fun while visiting them, and those board games had been used by my father and uncle when they too were children.

That's the simple beauty of board games and the honest reason they stick around for so long in homes around the world- once they have been purchased, they can be enjoyed literally for decades. Incidentally, those particular titles I'm getting nostalgic over were the classic Mastermind game and a copy of Scrabble, both of which had stood the test of time through string game play and concepts that hadn't aged.

This is also why titles such as Trivial Pursuits and Monopoly are still so very popular with families as Christmas presents as well as treats on birthdays and suchlike. The methods of play may have evolved a little over the years, and in the case of Trivial Pursuit the questions change on a regular basis, but it is their basic concepts that have kept them alive in the hearts and minds of people everywhere, who will no doubt introduce their own children and grandchildren to them when the time comes.

There are some very special board games available in stores and online for Christmas this year, many of which have the potential to become just as beloved as those two games my grandparents would play regularly with me. There are games to suit all tastes and interests, including games based on movie properties, as in the case of the New Moon board game based on the second film in the Twilight Saga, along with many others besides.

There's a fun new version of the legendary Monopoly game in the form of the Monopoly City Edition, along with titles such as the Bananagrams game, Quirkle, Quiddler, Apples to Apples, The Settlers of Catan, Pictureka and more. Some of these games have the potential to be modern classics, just going to show how much board games are a part of our culture even now in the modern age.

Four faculty members from the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin have been selected to receive Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) awards totaling nearly $1.4 million from the National Science Foundation.

The awards are the most prestigious offered by the foundation's CAREER Program, and provide up to five years of funding to junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations.

The four faculty members from the Cockrell School who received awards are:

Ying Xu, assistant professor in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering, was awarded for her project "Emission and Transport of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) in Indoor Environments." PBDEs are used extensively in the U.S. as flame retardants in consumer products and building materials. The goal of Xu's research is to understand the fundamental mechanisms governing emission and transport of PBDEs.

Miryung Kim, an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, was awarded for her work on "Analysis and Automation of Systematic Software Modifications." Kim's research focuses on software engineering, specifically on software evolution. Her research group, Software Evolution and Analysis Laboratory (SEAL), develops innovative program analysis algorithms and software development tools to make it easier to develop and maintain large-scale software systems. SEAL's mission is to improve programmer productivity and program correctness. Kim studies software development practices through user studies with professional software engineers and through rigorous empirical analysis of open source project data.

Mikhail Belkin, assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, was awarded for his work on "Terahertz Semiconductor Laser Sources for Operation Above Cryogenic Temperatures." The objective of his research is to investigate and develop widely and continuously tunable terahertz quantum-cascade lasers and other active devices based upon monolithic and voltage tunable metamaterial waveguides. The demonstration of amplifier and distributed feedback configurations will allow the output power to be scaled to several milliwatts or greater with a directive beam pattern. The broader impacts of his research lie in the development of a new approach for achieving tunable semiconductor lasers. Additionally, terahertz technology requires improved sources and detectors for sensing, imaging and spectroscopy.

Deji Akinwande, assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, was awarded for his research on "Integrated Si-CMOS and Graphene Heterogeneous Nanoelectronics." The objective of his research program is to create graphene devices integrated with silicon electronics for advanced systems for the first time. The integration will lead to next generation nanoelectronics that leverage the complexity, scale, cost and technology proliferation of mature silicon systems with the unique functionalities of graphene for future ubiquitous advanced systems. Such systems are transformative and could lead to revolutionary new products similarly to how gigahertz silicon electronics revolutionized mobile communications.

'My Brother The Pope': Georg Ratzinger, Brother Of Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI) Writes About Growing Up In Catholic Faith (Excerpt)

The following is an excerpt from "My Brother the Pope"by Msgr Georg Ratzinger as told to Michael Hesemann. ? 2012 Ignatius Press -? published with permission.

Generally speaking, our family made a big thing of Christmas. The preparations already began with the First Sunday of Advent. At that time, the Rorate Masses were celebrated at six in the morning, and the priests wore white vestments. Normally violet is the color of the vestments in Advent, but these were special votive Masses that were supposed to recall the appearance of the Archangel Gabriel to the Mother of God and her words, ?Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it done to me according to thy word? (Lk 1:38). That was the main theme of these ?liturgies of the angels,? as they were also called, in which the appropriate passage from the Gospel of Luke was read. After we started school, we used to attend these Masses in the early morning, before classes began. Outside it was still night, everything was dark, and the people often shivered in the cold. Yet the warm glow of the sanctuary compensated for the early rising and the walk through snow and ice. The dark church was illuminated by candles and tapers, which were often brought by the faithful and provided not only light but also a little warmth. Afterward we went home first, ate breakfast, and only then set out for school. These Rorate Masses were wonderful signposts leading us to Christmas.

In our family, though, it was not only Christmas that was marked by the deep faith of our parents and the religious customs of our homeland. From our parents we learned what it means to have a firm grasp of faith in God. Every day we prayed together, and in fact before and after each meal (we ate our breakfast, dinner and supper together). The main prayer time was after the mid-day dinner, when the particular concerns of the family were expressed. Part of it was the prayer to Saint Dismas, the ?good thief,? a former criminal who was crucified together with Jesus on Mount Calvary, repented on the cross, and begged the Lord for mercy. We prayed to him, the patron of repentant thieves, to protect Father from professional troubles.

Being a policeman, after all, was a rather dangerous profession, and we were often very anxious about Father. Especially when he worked the night shift and had to walk the beat. When a misdemeanor or a crime had occurred in the area he patrolled, it was his duty to investigate it. Father often worked at night, and then it could happen that he was held up, for whatever reasons, and came home later. Then, naturally, we children and Mother were anxious and prayed that nothing had happened to him. So, of course, our prayer life was always marked by concern about Father. When we were children, our parents also put us to bed and prayed our evening prayers with us. They used a very special form of blessing and repeated it three times. Unfortunately I do not remember the wording today. This was followed by another somewhat expansive blessing. Once I asked my father what it meant, but all he said to me was, ?I do not know exactly, either. My father and mother used to pray this prayer at my bedside.?

I must admit we seldom went to Mass together, simply because our father had to work on Sunday or else sang in the church choir. When we were somewhat older, I and then later my brother served at the altar usually on Sundays and during the week, while Mother and our sister went to another Mass. Often on Sundays we attended Mass twice, once as servers and another time with our family, for instance, the early Mass at 6:00 and the main parish Mass at 8:00 or 8:30. Then, in the afternoon at 2:00, there were devotions, and on feast days a Vespers service.

This piety, which was lived and put into practice, defined our whole life, even though today I celebrate only one Mass and refrain from going to a second one. Nevertheless, it was imparted to us as children in the cradle, so to speak, and we remained faithful to it throughout our lives.

I am convinced that the lack of this traditional piety in many families is also a reason why there are too few priestly vocations today. Many people in our time practice a form of atheism rather than the Christian faith. In some respects, they may maintain a sort of vestigial religiosity; perhaps they still go to Mass on the major feast days, but this rudimentary faith long ago ceased to permeate their lives, and it has no bearing on their everyday routine. It starts with sitting down at table and beginning a meal without even thinking about prayer, and it ends with no longer coming to church regularly on Sundays. Thus, an almost pagan way of life has taken root. If there are no religious practices even in family life, then this has an effect on all the rest of human life. I often speak with brother priests, and in almost all cases it seems that they prayed regularly as a family and went to Mass together. This then shaped their whole lives and directed them toward God. Thus, their vocation fell on fertile soil.

How Stigma Hurts Us ? Healthcare Alternative Systems

There is only one thing I follow more closely than?articles that relate to Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs), and that is?the comment section that follows these articles.

As I mentioned before in an earlier?post about Sonia?Hermosillo, articles on?PMADs usually highlight?recent cases?of infanticide,?which (contrary to popular belief) is more likely the result of Postpartum Psychosis than a?Postpartum Mood Disorder. (Want to know what the difference is? Click here.)

This week, one of my colleagues forwarded me?an article about?Lorna Valle , a mother?charged with infanticide in Los Angeles.?While?I was certainly?pleased that the article forwarded to me was written?with a great deal of sensitivity to the complex issues surrounding this tragic case, I was deeply troubled by the?harsh judgments?embedded in many of the comments.

Of course, I am sympathetic to the fact that infanticide is a topic that angers many people.?Infanticide should infuriate us, because it doesn?t need to happen. What saddens me is?that there are people whom, without thorough knowledge of Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders and Postpartum Psychosis OR the circumstances surrounding specific cases would be so quick to judge the women and their family members.

Making judgments such as these without examining the details is a detriment to the families who are going through this awful tragedy, and also to?women?struggling?with PMADs. Our lack of thorough understanding and?persecutory attitudes towards women who are suffering with these horrendous illnesses contributes to the many thousands?who?suffer in silence because they are afraid to seek help.

While I am certainly not softening the reality of?a child?dying at the hands of a mother, I am suggesting we put all judgment aside and ask ourselves these important questions:?Did the mother have a prior history of violence towards her children? (In most cases of Postpartum Psychosis, the answer is no). Did she? receive competent care from an expert in treating Postpartum Psychosis? (If not, there is no way to be sure that whomever was treating her was capable of recognizing the real risks and responding appropriately). Did she have a supportive spouse, friends,?and extended family? (If not, it is unlikely that she would have had enough support to examine ?other options? that many people mention in their commentary).

I am not making an excuse for anyone here, but I am saying that Postpartum Psychosis is an illness that, under?specific circumstances,?can cause?ANY highly functional woman to take the life of her child. In many cases these are women who are described as healthy, outgoing, loving, responsible, social, professional, and are?well-loved by many. These are women whose spouses and families would never, ever in their wildest dreams imagine that this could happen to them. Which is why competent care is important?Nobody could possibly estimate the risk unless they know EXACTLY what they are looking for. The symptoms of psychosis are often very subtle in these women.

I?d like to share some?examples of the comments I found to?be particularly?troubling.?Please note that I am in no way attempting?to disrespect the?commentators. I believe that everyone is entitled to their opinions, but?I am simply highlighting the ways in which our statements, especially when uninformed, can be harmful someone who desperately needs help.

[Her husband]?could have got her locked up in a mental hospital for (its 72 hours here) and gotten her checked out.

While I wholeheartedly agree that there are times in which involuntary hospitalization are necessary to protect mom and baby, there is no compassion in the?language used here. ?Locking someone up in a mental hospital? implies two things. First of all, it implies that?a woman who is struggling with mental illess is ?crazy? and should have her freedom taken away. Second, it implies that hospitalization by itself?can cure, fix, or solve the problem.

Hospitalization can be useful when a woman needs to be stabilized. It can help her get caught up on sleep, and can provide a safe environment in which medications can be stabilized. But I have never, ever seen a woman walk out of a hospital cured of a PMAD. She still requires medication, therapy, and loving support from family and friends long after her hospital stay.

Why would any parent let a mentally ill parent near their kids alone?

If 1 out of every?5 people has a mental illness, then it?s guaranteed that?there are a lot of ?mentally ill parents? out there doing a perfectly fine job parenting.? Frankly, it worries me that there are still people out there who believe that simply having a mental illness warrants having? human rights taken away.

Seriously, I work in a doctors ofc and i swear nine out of ten women who walk thru the door seeking antidepressants are white women, i don?t get it [.]

The woman mentioned in the article is from Guatemala, therefore?I am assuming that?this commentator?is referring to the fact that in many cases, Caucasian women are far more likely to reach out for services.? While all women are at risk of developing PMADs,??PMADs are more prevalent among Hispanic and African American women, and/or women of lower socioeconomic groups.?Women are more/less likely to seek services because of?cultural attitudes and?access to resources, which we know can be limited among women in lower socioeconomic groups.

I?m so sick of the I was depressed so I hurt/killed my kids. Hope they provide some help for you in jail because no matter what is wrong with you?you?re a murderer plain and simple.

Depression does not cause women to?kill their children. Postpartum Psychosis, coupled with inadequate or inaccessible?treatment/support can and does. There is a major distinction between women who kill their children because of Postpartum Psychosis, and women who kill because of underlying sociopathic tendencies. All?women have a right to be examined and judged based on every single circumstance of her case.

Women who commit infanticide because of untreated or ineffectively treated Postpartum Psychosis ARE victims. As a professional in this field, I know how difficult it is to find competent care when you?re struggling with such a serious and largely misunderstood affliction. It is not as simple as ?getting help? because in many cases, specialized help literally?does not exist. These women and children?ARE victims, because they are falling through the cracks, plain and simple.

If the father knew the wife was depressed and needed help (which sounds like he did) ?he should have never left the children with her alone. ?He is as much to blame as anyone. ?It is like giving a depressed person a gun.

Unless a mental health?professional A) Recognized the seriousness of her illness, and B) Clearly instructed her husband and other family members?to make sure someone was with her at all times, there is NO WAY this man could be held accountable for his wife?s actions. He is obviously not a trained mental health professional, and although he was concerned about his wife?s behavior and wellbeing, there is no way he could have known how to appropriately respond to the situation without the guidance of someone well versed in this illness.

I?m so tired of hearing how all these people are victims?victim is an excuse. She could?ve walked away. She could?ve did a million other things than what she did.

Neither you nor I know the circumstances surrounding this woman?s life, so we cannot even begin to?presume what she (probably in a state of psychosis) could or could not have done. However, it seems to me that her husband did seek help on her behalf. Since we do not know any of the details of what treatments were tried (and we should not assume), there is no way of knowing from our vantage point who is to ?blame.? That being said, if she is anything like many of the hispanic women I see in my office, it is possible that she truly had nobody to turn to.

[P]eople who think she is victim because of postpartum depression, you are as guilty as her.

Denying?that inadequately treated?Postpartum Mental Illness can cause such a tragedy is the only crime here. If we acknowledge?that roughly 20 percent of ALL postpartum women become victims of these illnesses, and we resolve to do something about it (screening at postpartum and well baby visits, and referring to specialists), we won?t need to argue about who is guilty.

One of my greatest wishes is that one day, women will not have to be afraid of seeking help. And when they seek help, they will be met with the expertise, compassion, and support they so desperately need to be well again. When a woman is out of control because of a mental illness, she cannot possibly be fully responsible for herself, which is why it is OUR responsibility to educate ourselves and do everything within our power to provide care that will truly make a difference.

If you are concerned that you or someone you love may be experiencing a Perintatal Mood or Anxiety Disorder, contact Postpartum Support International.?They can help you find experts in your area who can help you or your loved one recover.
