Herman Cain absent from Iowa, leads Iowa poll

Herman Cain's latest poll numbers suggest that Cain's absence from Iowa makes the heart grow stronger. Mitt Romney at No. 2 (also seldom visits)

The latest Iowa poll from The Des Moines Register shows Herman Cain leading the GOP field in the Hawkeye State, with 23 percent support. That?s a 13 point jump since the Register?s last poll, taken in June.

Amazingly, Cain?s lead comes despite almost no campaigning in the state: Since the August 13 straw poll (in which he placed fifth), he has been to Iowa just once. (See here for Decoder?s take on whether Herman Cain could actually win this thing.)

Mitt Romney, who has also spent little time in Iowa (just one visit since August), is running a close second in the poll, with 22 percent. There?s a cautionary note for the former Massachusetts governor, however: Among those who say they ?definitely? plan to vote in the caucuses, he is at just 10 percent support, compared with Cain?s 27 percent.

The only other candidate even in double digits is Ron Paul, in third place with 12 percent.

Those polling in single digits include Michele Bachmann (8 percent) - who has staked her entire campaign on winning Iowa - and Rick Santorum (5 percent), who, next week, will become the only candidate to have visited all of Iowa?s 99 counties.

Of course, the poll was taken before news broke of alleged sexual harassment cases. Cain's campaign disputed the Politico report that said Cain had been accused of sexually suggestive behavior toward at least two female employees while he was head of the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s..

What gives, Iowa? The more time a candidate spends campaigning in your state, the less you like them?

UN's Ban seeks lifeline to flagging Cyprus talks (Reuters)

MANHASSET, New York (Reuters) ? U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon will attempt to throw a lifeline to flagging Cyprus peace talks on Sunday, calling a two-day meeting with its rival leaders to end a deadlock in a dispute harming Turkey's EU entry bid and energy projects in the eastern Mediterranean.

Cyprus, with a combined population of around one million people, was torn asunder in a Turkish invasion in 1974 triggered by a brief Greek inspired coup. The conflict, a significant source of tension between NATO allies Greece and Turkey, is thrown into sharper focus by Ankara's attempts to join the EU and a simmering dispute over Mediterranean hydrocarbon riches.

Switching from the normal abode of peace talks at an abandoned airport compound on the scorchingly hot island to a secluded woodlands retreat blanketed by snow on Long Island, the United Nations is hoping the consultations will end a logjam and pave the way forward in a conflict which has long defied mediation.

"We will use this meeting for them to make their case that they have a way to solve divergences on core issues, that this is not a complete deadlock," said a diplomat close to the process.

Ban, together with Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, made a brief public appearance on Sunday for photos. They did not make any comment.

Ban's stated intention when calling the meeting last July 7, that of reporting agreement on outstanding issues, has not materialized. He was likely to give them more time to resolve differences, diplomats said.

Cyprus's reunification process has stumbled on complex issues such as future co-governance under a federal system, an issue one source said was on the agenda of the two-day meeting.

Both communities now run their affairs - Greek Cypriots as the official representatives of the whole of Cyprus and Turkish Cypriots, whose self-governing enclave is not internationally recognized.

Although festering for years, diplomats say they want a deal by the time Cyprus assumes the EU presidency in July 2012, worried that Turkey will sever already troubled ties altogether with the bloc. Ankara does not have diplomatic relations with Cyprus's internationally recognized Greek Cypriot government, which represents the whole island in the EU.

Ankara also opposes attempts by Greek Cypriots to drill for gas south of the island, saying it risks derailing the peace process. U.S. based Noble Energy started drilling for natural gas south of Cyprus in September and Cypriot officials say there are encouraging indications of large gas deposits.

Ban was due to spend several hours with Eroglu and Christofias at the secluded Greentree Estate on Long Island on Sunday and Monday. A team led by U.N. envoy Alexander Downer was to hold proximity talks with the delegates for the rest of the time, a source familiar with consultations said.

The sides agree in principle on reunifying the island as a two-zone federation with a strong central government, but on little else. There are deep rooted disputes on governance, particularly focused on how future leaders will be elected and by whom, property rights of thousands of internally displaced people and redrawing territorial boundaries between the two sides.

No cupcakes here! Gold-medal school fights obesity (AP)

DANVILLE, Ill. ? Five-year-olds dance hip-hop to the alphabet. Third-graders learn math by twisting into geometric shapes, fifth-graders by calculating calories. And everyone goes to the gym ? every day.

In the middle of America's heartland, a small public school, Northeast Elementary Magnet School, has taken on a hefty task ? reversing obesity.

And it's won a gold medal for it, becoming the first elementary school in the country to receive that award from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. The Alliance was founded by the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation to reduce childhood obesity. Only two other schools have taken the gold.

The cafeteria here serves fresh fruit and veggies, low-fat or no-fat milk, no sodas or fried foods and no gooey desserts. There are no sweets on kids' birthdays and food is never used as a reward. Teachers wear pedometers and parents have to sign a contract committing to the school's healthy approach.

Northeast Elementary is not in some posh, progressive suburb. It's in Danville, Ill., an economically struggling city of 30,000 in farm country some 150 miles south of Chicago. But teachers, parents and students have embraced the rigorous curriculum and kids even call it "fun."

From the outside, it's a drab 50's-era yellow brick building in a blue-collar neighborhood of modest frame homes, a few blocks from a homeless shelter and a Salvation Army donation center. Inside, it's a cheerful oasis for almost 300 kids and has caught the attention of some of the nation's biggest obesity-fighting advocates.

Former President Bill Clinton says the steps Northeast has taken are an exemplary way to tackle "a terrible public health problem."

"We will never change it by telling people how bad it is. We've got to show people how good it can be," Clinton said, paraphrasing a colleague at the Alliance's June awards ceremony in Little Rock, Ark.

Northeast's strict, no-goodies program might sound extreme, but students seem to have bought it.

During a recent nutrition lesson, first-graders sat raptly on the hallway floor as a teacher read "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," a classic kids' story about a caterpillar that can't seem to stop eating ? all kinds of fruit at first. But when the bug moved on to chocolate cake and ice cream, the youngsters gasped and said in hushed tones, "junk food," as if it were poison.

"We're a healthy school," says 10-year-old Naomi Woods, a shy, slim fifth-grader. "We're not allowed to eat junk food or stuff like that."

Sandy-haired Timothy Mills, a fourth-grader, says the focus "just keeps us more fit, plus we have a lot more fun."

Like Mills, an earnest, heavy-set 9-year-old, Northeast kids aren't all skinny. Even some kindergartners are clearly overweight. But they still jump enthusiastically to the alphabet song, and though chubbier kids struggle to run around the football field during gym class, there doesn't seem to be much grumbling.

Physical education teacher Becky Burgoyne said it's sometimes tough to get kids of "all different shapes and sizes" to be physically active.

"I just ask that students do their best and improve on what they can already do," Burgoyne said.

Some schools "may have physical education twice a week, once a week, and that's not acceptable. Children need to move," she said. "To have a healthy body is to have a healthy brain and therefore they become better at reading and math and science. It all works together."

The students mostly mirror Danville and surrounding Vermilion County ? generally poorer, less healthy than the state average, with many families struggling with obesity and related problems.

The percentage of overweight kids at Northeast increased in 2009, the program's third year, but dropped slightly last year, to 32 percent; 17 percent are obese. Those are similar to national figures, Principal Cheryl McIntire said. With only three years of data, it's too soon to call the slight dip in the percentage of overweight children a trend. But she considers it a promising sign, and there's no question that the children are learning healthy habits.

In a recent math class, fifth grade teacher Lisa Unzicker explained how food labels can be misleading by listing only calories per serving, not per container. Pointing to an image of a pretzel bag label projected on a screen at the front of the classroom, she taught students to figure out how many calories are in a whole bag, based on the amount in each serving.

You have to be careful about potato chips and candy bars, she told the class. "This is why it pays to be a very conscious consumer."

Teachers and parents credit McIntire for the school's success. The principal joined Northeast in 2008, a year after the staff moved to adopt the healthy focus, and has made it her mission to instill that mantra.

McIntire literally "walks the walk." When students need a talking-to, she walks to their classrooms and escorts them to and from her office rather than just messaging for them. When it's her turn for recess duty, she walks with her pedometer around the school's big field instead of standing on the sidelines. She recalls a student recently calling out, "Hey, Mrs. McIntire, are you doing your steps?"

McIntire is closely involved with choosing school menus and secured money from the state and local school district that have paid for fresh produce, including things like kiwi fruit that many children have never seen before.

A recent lunch menu featured whole-grain, reduced-fat cheese pizza, broccoli and cauliflower buds, sweet corn, chilled pears, low-fat pudding, and 1 percent low-fat milk.

McIntire has changed her own eating habits, giving up potato chips and shedding 15 pounds since last year.

Tall, slender and a youthful 56, McIntire guides Northeast with a firm but loving hand. She greets students by name each morning, helps with untied shoelaces, and offers hugs. And she scolds kids who have messy uniforms or are rude to their classmates.

School hallways feature signs about good food choices and being healthy, and a poster about the Alliance's gold award is prominently displayed near the school office.

The Alliance established a Healthy Schools' program in 2006, with funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. It helps schools that want to become healthier and meet alliance criteria for winning medals. More than 500 schools have won bronze and silver awards. Those gold medals are tougher to come by. Memorial High School in West New York, N.J., was the first school in the country ever to win a gold. Last year, Northeast became the first elementary school to do that. Rio Hondo Elementary in suburban Los Angeles is the latest to win it.

Ginny Ehrlich, chief executive officer for the Alliance for a Healthier Generation says of Northeast, "They truly stand out." The school has done a remarkable job of making "healthy eating and activity the norm."

Since Northeast is a magnet school, students have to apply to attend, although they don't need to test in. Besides committing to the healthy mindset, parents must volunteer 26 hours at the school each year.

"There certainly are people who are much more invested than others, but we have gotten so much positive feedback from parents," McIntire said.

In her first year, McIntire recruited students by posting advertisements in the local newspaper. "I don't need to do that anymore," she said. For the current school year, there were more than 80 applications for 48 kindergarten slots.

"We have people calling everyday wondering if their child can get in," she said.

Shelbi Black says Northeast has had an "amazing, life-altering" influence on her kids, 10-year-old Kayla and Carter, 5. They've come home requesting fruits and vegetables they used to reject. Carter was thrilled to make frozen fruit shish kebobs in school, and Kayla "was so excited the other day because she made her goal in running the mile and she was so happy that she knocked down her time from last year," Black said.

Tim Mills' mom, Charlyn Hester, says since the school adopted the healthy program, her family has switched from eating lots of convenience foods to lean grass-fed beef and lots of fruits and vegetables. Her oldest daughter, a recent Northeast graduate, has slimmed down and Hester says she thinks Tim and his 11-year-old sister will, too. Hester herself has lost almost 100 pounds since 2009.

The family's grocery bills are higher, but Hester, a freelance writer, says she and her husband, a security officer, have decided it's worth spending more on food and forgoing things like a new car, for their kids' health.

"It's not necessarily a financial hardship, but it's certainly an investment," she said.

Health department officials say they have not calculated obesity rates for children in Danville and the county. Psychologist Richard Elghammer, who works with a large rural health clinic in Danville, says about one-third of the kids treated there are overweight or obese ? similar to the national average. National data suggest that the county's obesity rate alone for adults, about 32 percent, is also similar to the national average. About two-thirds of adults are overweight.

But Vermilion County rates of obesity-related illness including heart disease are higher, and more than 80 percent of county residents don't eat government-recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables, according to national surveys.

Dr. Thomas Halloran, an internist who treats adults in Danville, has been working to provide financial support and resources to Northeast, through his medical group, Carle Clinic. Halloran says many of his patients have diabetes and other illnesses tied to a lifetime of obesity and poor health habits. By instilling healthy habits in kids starting in kindergarten, the school is making an important contribution to the community's health, Halloran said.

Trial begins for NJ lawyer accused in murder plot (AP)

NEWARK, N.J. ? The government is making its opening statement in the trial of a noted New Jersey defense attorney charged with setting up the murder of a potential witness.

Paul Bergrin is a former federal prosecutor whose clients as a defense attorney included Queen Latifah (lah-TEE'-fuh) and the rap group Naughty By Nature. He was arrested in May 2009 and accused of running a racketeering enterprise that specialized in drugs, prostitution, witness tampering and murder.

The trial in U.S. District Court in Newark centers on the 2004 murder of Deshawn "Kemo" McCray. He was supposed to testify against one of Bergrin's clients in a drug case.

Bergrin is representing himself in the trial and is expected to make an opening statement later Monday.

Rare moth established in the UK

The charity Butterfly Conservation says that the rare moth typically found in the Mediterranean has become established in the UK.

The flame brocade moth appears to have started a new colony on the south coast of England.

Researchers from the charity have attributed the arrival of an unusually high number of migrant species to the recent warm weather.

They described this year's migration season as the best in years.

MOTH OR BUTTERFLY?

  • Moths and butterflies both belong to the order Lepidoptera - but if you look closely, it is relatively easy to spot the difference
  • Moths tend to have thick, fuzzy bodies, whereas butterfly bodies are usually thin and smooth
  • Butterflies are active during the day but moths get busy at night; there are exceptions though, such as the hummingbird hawk moth, which flies both day and night
  • Butterflies tend to be more brightly coloured than moths, although there are some very colourful moths, such as the cinnabar (pictured)

Some of the insects will have flown for three or four days to get to the UK, on the back of a helpful southerly tailwind.

The organisation's head of moth conservation, Mark Parsons, said: "Autumn is usually a good time for immigrant species, but it's the sheer number and diversity this year that's special."

The flame brocade, perhaps the most significant arrival, was first spotted by chance in a back garden in Sussex.

Michael Blencowe, BC's officer in the county said: "I'd never seen one of these moths before so I grabbed my net and went off to find out if there were any others about at a suitable site nearby.

"I saw 10 that night and there have been recordings of 20 or more there every night since"

In the past just a few flame brocades have been spotted on UK shores; this is the largest number seen in the country for 130 years. It has led experts to suggest that there may now be a moth colony on the site.

Strange visitors

In Dorset, the moth made famous by the film Silence of the Lambs has been seen at an RSPB nature reserve. The death's head hawk moth has a striking skull-like pattern on its thorax.

Large numbers of vestal moths and several crimson speckled moths have also been flying around the south coast of England and Wales. And the extremely rare tropical species, Spoladea recurvalis, has been recorded this year for the first time ever in Ireland, and for only the second time in Scotland.

It all adds up to the best year for migrating moths since 2006, which contrasts with a rather more bleak picture for the UK's native species.

Overall numbers of have fallen by a third in the last 35 years. Their natural habitat is slowly being eaten away by development and commercial farming.

There will be more on this story on Autumnwatch which begins on Friday at 2030 on BBC Two.

Scientists work on deep sea seismic network

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography has been awarded a $1 million grant to develop a deep sea seismic network.

Scientists hope this new system will plug current monitoring gaps.

Ships typically deploy earthquake sensors in the ocean that gather data for a certain amount of time before they are retrieved by vessels.

Scripps will pair with industry in the project that's being funded by the National Science Foundation. Data from the sea floor sensors will be transmitted to a surfboard-sized autonomous unmanned vessel on the ocean's surface, and then to shore via satellite.

Researchers say the unmanned vessel would be able to stay stationary for longer periods of time, allowing for more data collection.

How Steve Jobs reshaped the tech? | Advanced E-Commerce,E ...

Apple stunned the tech world in December 1996 when it acquired Jobs? NeXT Software, which had evolved out of NeXT Computer.

(Credit:
Michael Rondou/Newscom)

It?s difficult to overstate how dramatically Steve Jobs reshaped how we interact with computers. The irascible, brilliant impresario led a transition from minicomputers and IBM PCs squashed into beige metal boxes to the Macintosh, the
iPhone, and the concept that technology should be fun to use.

Thanks to more than a dozen books about the Apple co-founder, and movies like Pirates of Silicon Valley, much of Jobs? life has become well-known. He started Apple with legendary engineer Steve Wozniak, at a time when the personal computer industry barely existed, after dropping out of Reed College.

Jobs returned to Apple in 1996?CNET?s headline at the time quipped that Apple had ?acquired? Steve Jobs?and then went on to reshape the music industry and the mobile phone business. With the
iPad, Apple validated, or perhaps even created, the
tablet business. With Apple Inc., Jobs led the world?s most valuable company measured by market capitalization.

But what?s not as well-known is how Jobs? later successes arose from his previous failures.

In 1985, as the personal computer industry experienced a period of falling sales and complaints about Jobs? mercurial behavior were rising, the Apple board effectively fired Jobs. He would remain as chairman, but he was relieved of any operational duties as head of the Macintosh division.

?I had never been to Steve?s house in Woodside before,? wrote Andy Hertzfeld, a member of the Macintosh development team, describing a visit to Jobs? house two days after the board?s decision. ?It was a 14-bedroom, 17,250 square foot Spanish colonial style mansion built in 1926 that Steve had purchased around a year ago, in 1984?I tried to convince him that the change wasn?t necessarily so bad, and that I would be excited about returning to Apple to work with him on a small team again. But Steve was inconsolable, and more depressed than I had ever seen him before.?

At the age of 30, Jobs had already left an indelible mark on the personal computer industry. He had also accumulated a net worth of $100 million in Apple stock and had been featured on the cover of Time magazine. If not already a national icon, he was close to becoming one.

But, as Alan Deutschman recounts in his 2000 book ?The Second Coming of Steve Jobs,? Jobs was far from content. He talked with friends about focusing on cultivating his garden. He considered moving to the Soviet Union to promote computer usage. He toyed with the idea of running for the U.S. Senate. He talked with architect I.M. Pei about demolishing that aging Woodside mansion and building the perfect Silicon Valley home (in 2009, he finally secured permission from the town to do just that). He bicycled through Tuscany.

Most of all, it seemed, Jobs wanted to prove that his earlier successes?the Apple II, II+, IIe, IIc, soon the IIgs, and the Macintosh?were not accidents. He hoped to demonstrate that he could do it again.

That meant forming a new company, which Jobs named NeXT Computer. Instead of Apple?s humble beginnings in a Silicon Valley garage, NeXT was flush with cash, and Jobs paid a prestigious designer $100,000 to create a logo. Jobs sold $70 million of his Apple stock to fund the venture, which was originally intended to make computers designed specifically for colleges and universities. (Disclaimer: I worked for NeXT in its headquarters, and on the east coast, as a consultant and contractor from 1990 to 1991.)

Just as Jobs intended the Macintosh as a counterpoint to graceless, boxy PC clones, he wanted NeXT to represent a more advanced, more aesthetic, approach to computing. He took the early NeXT team to Pittsburgh to visit Carnegie Mellon University, which would later invest in the company, and organized a side trip to Frank Lloyd Wright?s iconic Fallingwater house in the Pennsylvania countryside. Jobs obsessed about, and patented, details including a tilting monitor stand, a rarity at the time. He obsessed over what shade of black the case should be painted. The motherboard, too, had to be visually appealing.

Even the NeXT factory in Fremont, across the San Francisco bay from Woodside and Cupertino, was intended to be a model of elegance and efficiency. Jobs regaled visitors with descriptions of how it employed then-novel just in time manufacturing techniques. It was designed to be near-fully automated, with NeXT machines being made by even larger machines.

The result, a one foot by one foot by one foot die-cast magnesium cube, was stunning. The NeXT cube was unlike any other computer to date: it was sleek and black, with a gorgeous user interface a decade ahead of its time. Instead of a thicket of cables, the cube relied on a single cord that connected the monitor with the CPU and carried connections for power, video, audio, microphone, keyboard, and mouse. The operating system was named NeXTstep, based on a variant of Berkeley Unix with low-level functions borrowed from Carnegie Mellon, and it had an object-oriented development environment that was the envy of the industry.

Unfortunately, the NeXT cube was also priced unlike any other personal computer to date: Jobs set the retail price at $9,995. That wasn?t unreasonable for a workstation, which DEC, HP, and Sun were selling at the time, but universities tended to be more interested in price and performance than aesthetics. NeXT was far too expensive to be a popular success, and even though the interface was speedy, adding a hard drive to supplement a pioneering 250MB reusable magneto-optical drive upped the price still more.

The cube was a flop. Businessland, a chain of computer stores, had hoped to sell up to 15,000 a year, but had sold only 360 by the end of 1989. The automated factory was nearly idle. And NeXT, still unprofitable, was burning through cash far too quickly. Jobs? other venture, Pixar, was struggling too.

In September 1989, Jobs tried again. He rented Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco for the launch of the NeXTstation, which was the pizza-box successor to the cube. It wasn?t as expandable (the cube had four slots, one of which was filled by the motherboard), or as elegant, but it was far cheaper to manufacture. Perhaps more importantly, the NeXTstation was available in color; the original cube was only available in two-bit greyscale. Jobs relented on another point and added a 3.5? floppy disc drive.

But prices remained anything but inexpensive. The NeXTstation started at $4,995 for a greyscale model. Sales picked up, but were a fraction of what Sun Microsystems, which made unattractive but highly functional boxes, could boast.

By 1991, as NeXT?s dismal sales became public, the once-iconic entrepreneur was savaged. A Forbes article reported: ?There are very few miracle workers in the business world, and it is now clear that Steve Jobs is not one of them? Now, three years after NeXT?s workstation debuted in a splashy press event, the 36-year-old Jobs is in serious trouble. NeXT has sold only 15,000 machines in its history, according to Vicki Brown, vice president at market researcher International Data Corp., little more than 10 percent of the volume Sun Microsystems does in a single year. A large but unknown fraction of NeXT?s sales have been at steep discounts to schools.?

The burn rates at NeXT and Pixar remained far too high. Without a dramatic change, Jobs risked insolvency. Meanwhile, his longtime rival, Bill Gates, was worth billions.

That dramatic change came in 1993, when NeXT decided it would cease making hardware. The sleek cube, which Tim Berners-Lee used to develop the World Wide Web and which gave birth to the first-person shooter Doom, would become a museum piece. NeXT continued to improve its pioneering software, but it was hardly a marketplace success.

By this point, Jobs had been virtually ignored by the media, until his other company, Pixar, released Toy Story. Pixar?s initial public offering in November 1995 made Jobs a billionaire overnight. (Jobs? biological sister, Mona Simpson, wrote a book around this time that was a thinly veiled profile of her sibling. Its opening line: ?He was a man too busy to flush toilets.?)

It was anything but obvious at the time, but that marked the beginning of the return of Steve Jobs and the start of greatest second act in American business. In December 1996, Apple announced it was buying NeXT, now called NeXT Software, for $400 million. Jobs would become an ?adviser,? reporting directly to Apple chairman and CEO Gilbert Amelio. By the following July, Amelio was out, and Jobs was, as CNET reported at the time, taking an ?expanded role as a key adviser to Apple?s board and executive management team.?

Beyond a leadership shakeup, Apple had another problem: Macintosh technology was no longer head-and-shoulders above Microsoft?s. Windows 95 was an undeniable success, adopting many of the Mac?s features, and it was followed by Windows 98. Plus, Windows PCs were being powered by the very capable Pentium chip; meanwhile, Apple suffered from too many product variations and competition from clone makers. Worse, it was losing money.

?What would I do? I?d shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders,? Michael Dell told a crowd of several thousand IT executives in 1997.

Jobs soon curbed the practice of cloning and, within a year of his return, Apple introduced the landmark iMac. But it was NeXTstep that morphed into OS X and gave Apple a badly-needed technological boost by including features like true multitasking, a superior development environment, and an advanced interface resting on top of a stable version of Unix. OS X was finally introduced in 2001, followed by the iPod, retail stores, the iTunes Store, the iPhone, and the iPad.

The irony? An operating system that grew out of one man?s pursuit of perfection, and pique at being forced out of the company he founded, saved Apple from the fate predicted by Michael Dell. If history had unfolded a little differently, and Jobs had spent the late 1980s tending his garden or touring Europe, Apple might no longer exist, and the computer industry would be a far different place today.

Disclosure: The author worked for NeXT in its headquarters, and on the east coast, as a consultant and contractor from 1990 to 1991.

Symptoms And Causes Of Prostate Cancer - Signs Of Prostate ...

Symptoms And Causes Of Prostate CancerWhen a group of cells grow uncontrollably in the body and intrude upon and cause damage to other tissues nearby, it is called cancer. There are two main causes for cancer they are ? environmental factors and genetic factors.

Cancer as a disease does not have a cure and it can only be controlled from time to time. A very common type of cancer in male is the cancer of prostate.

The prostate is a gland of male reproductive organ. Prostate cancer is slow increasing and there have been cases where the cancer has been very aggressive. The cancer spreads mainly to the bones and lymph nodes in the earlier stages and can spread to many other parts of the body if it is left untreated.

Prostate cancer is one of the most observed types of cancer in male and there are more American and European men affected by this than Asian men. Prostate cancer usually develops in men who are past the age of fifty and in two thirds of the cases, it is slow growing.

There are innumerable cases where the cancer has not been detected because the symptoms were not significant enough and those who were affected, died due to various other reasons like a cardiac failure, lung infections, any other type of cancer or just old age.

Here are some facts about prostate cancer in men that will help you better understand this dreaded disease.

Symptoms And Causes Of Prostate Cancer

Causes

There is no list of causes for prostrate cancer and hence it really difficult to distinguish why some of them are aggressive while others are slow growing. This factor also makes the diagnosis of prostate cancer difficult.

Environmental and genetic factors could cause prostrate cancer in men. Changes in the male hormone past the age of fifty are also known to contribute to this type of cancer.

Symptoms

The symptoms of prostrate cancer in men are acute pain, erectile dysfunction, pain in urinating and problems during sexual intercourse.

The Numbers

There are more than 200,000 reported cases of prostrate cancers every year in the United States alone and there are more than 35,000 fatalities. Afro American men are more prone to this type of cancer than white men.

Alaskan natives, American Indians, Pacific Islanders and Asians are less prone to this type of cancer than White men and Hispanic men are most affected by this type of cancer. Prostate cancer is very common cancer in men and is the second largest reason for cancer fatalities among American men.

Screenings

Men above the age of fifty must get a rectal examination that can be done digitally. If there is a family history or if any of the symptoms of this cancer are pronounced, then this test should be done as soon as men turn 40. A PSA test can be done to check for the onset of prostate cancer.

Since cancer does not have a cure as yet, early detection is the key. Always be aware of our body and do not take even the slightest symptom you have lightly.
