A sixth of fast food addicts cut down on junk food with higher calories after the US introduced a calorie-labelling system in 2008.

Researchers from the New York School of Public Health and other centres found there has been a small but positive impact.

Analysis showed that 15 per cent of customers using calorie information purchased food items with significantly lower calories than customers who did not see or use the calorie information.

Obesity rates in the US are at an all time high in both adults and children and currently a third of adults and 17 per cent of children and teenagers are obese.

Several studies support an association between fast food consumption and excessive energy intake, but customers often underestimate the number of calories in restaurant meals, the journal bmj reports.

Surveys were carried out during lunchtime hours in spring 2007 (one year before the regulation) and in spring 2009 (nine months after its implementation) at 168 randomly selected locations of the top 11 fast food chains in the city, according to a New York School statement.

Adult customers provided register receipts and answered survey questions. Data from 7,309 customers in 2007 and 8,489 customers in 2009 were analysed. Overall, there was no decline in calories purchased across the full sample. However, three major chains saw significant reductions.

For example, at McDonalds, average energy per purchase fell by 5.3 percent, at Au Bon Pain, it fell by 14.4 per cent and at KFC, it dropped by 6.4 per cent. Together, these three chains represented 42 per cent of all customers in the study.

High street chains in England are about to embark on a similar, though voluntary scheme, as part of the government's Public Health Responsibility Deal.

Susan Jebb from the MRC Human Nutrition Research Centre in Cambridge, Britain believes that labelling is a step forward, but changes in food supply must follow.

She writes: "Calorie labelling will help consumers make an informed choice about what they eat, but sustained improvements in the nation's diet will require a transformation of the food supply too."

Ill. Congressman responds to child support report (AP)

CHICAGO ? Illinois Rep. Joe Walsh, a rising star in the tea party movement best known for his blistering lectures of President Barack Obama for "spending like a drunken sailor," is now being peppered with questions about his own financial responsibility after reports surfaced that he's being sued for more than $100,000 in unpaid child support.

Experts say whatever political star power the 49-year-old Republican previously emanated has been dimmed, if not extinguished, because for at least the immediate future it will be impossible for him to talk about anything other than his personal problems.

"Whenever he wants to go out and talk about the debt limit, they are going to want to talk about whether (he) is a deadbeat dad," said Kent Redfield, a professor emeritus of politics at the University of Illinois-Springfield. "His individual problems become the story and he never gets to another issue."

That means that whenever he appears on cable and network television shows to talk about the increasingly rancorous debt ceiling debate, the hosts now will invariably want to know about what is in his thick divorce file, Redfield said.

Redfield and others say it is all but impossible for politician to shake questions about whether or not they've provided for their families once a story like the one in Thursday's Chicago Sun-Times is published.

"Child support is always devastating to politicians when it (such a story) comes out, because the public says, `How can you manage our finances when you can't manage your own?'" said Larry Sabato, a political scientist and director of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics.

One tea party activist, though, said the story will not hurt Walsh in the movement because they will simply see it as a politically motivated attack.

"The public understands this, they see Joe Walsh stick up for people and now all of a sudden this appears in a newspaper," said Catherina Wojtowicz, of the Chicago Tea Patriots. "It's a smear piece because he's speaking out on behalf of the people."

That was Walsh's point when in a prepared statement he characterized the story about his ex-wife's effort seeking $117,437 in back child support and interest as a "hit piece."

He suggested it was no accident that the paper would run the story about a marriage that ended eight years ago and a court case filed nearly eight months ago just as lawmakers are in the middle of contentious debate over the debt ceiling.

"I am the tip of the spear in this current debate, and I will be attacked," he wrote in a statement issued Thursday morning.

Walsh, whose campaign was marked by allegations of financial mismanagement, said he thought he and his ex-wife were coming to an agreement on the money owed, according to a February court filing. And in the statement, he said he has been "trying to resolve this issue since January in a court of law ..."

The statement does not include any mention of how much he has paid in child support, only that he has "always given everything I have to meet my financial obligations to my children ..."

Nor does Walsh, whose website includes a video in which he accuses Obama of spending money "like a drunken sailor for three years," address allegations made by his ex-wife that at the time Walsh was not keeping up with his child support he took two international vacations with his girlfriend.

Walsh's attorney, R. Steven Polachek, denied that the congressman owed $117,437 in back child support and interest and said the amount was much less.

"I dispute that he owes the child support that she's claiming or anywhere near that amount," Polachek told the paper. "Joe Walsh hasn't been a big-time wage-earner politician until recently ? he's had no more problems with child support than any other average guy."

But Laura Walsh's attorney, Jack Coladarci, said that Walsh was paying about $1,000 less than he was ordered to between November 2005 and March 2008, and then stopped paying the entire $2,135 he owed every month from April 2008 until December 2010.

He said once Walsh began serving in Congress, earning $175,000 a year, he started making payments of $2,164 a month ? after Coladarci contacted the congressional office to advise the office of a court order to withhold that amount from his paycheck.

How this all plays out when Walsh runs for re-election remains to be seen. Despite disclosures about a 2008 home foreclosure, his divorce, traffic citations for not having car insurance, bounced checks and a lawsuit by a former campaign manager who alleged Walsh owed him $,20,000, Walsh was elected to Congress.

But Walsh was not all that popular among moderate Republicans, who often referred to himself as a "tea partier first and a Republican second."

Today, Republican officials in Illinois say they still support Walsh. At the same time, they are critical of some of the things he's said ? particularly when in his video he scolded Obama to "quit lying" about the debt issue.

"We don't need that kind of rhetoric with the president of the United States," said Pat Brady, the GOP state party chairman.

And Sabato said that it may not matter what he's said and what's been reported about his divorce the next time around. Thanks to the redrawing of congressional boundaries in Illinois by Democrats ? since been challenged with a lawsuit by Republicans ? Walsh was mapped out of his district.

Prison fight leaves 17 dead in Mexican border city (Reuters)

CIUDAD JUAREZ (Reuters) ? Seventeen people were killed in a prison gunfight in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico's most violent city, authorities said on Tuesday.

A spokesman for the mayor's office said three inmates entered cellblocks where there were 13 other prisoners late on Monday, and a fight began. Sixteen men and one woman were killed in the ensuing violence.

"This was a settling of scores inside the penitentiary," a spokesman for the public prosecutor's office in the state of Chihuahua, Carlos Gonzalez, told Milenio television.

The city on the border with Texas has been racked by a brutal turf war between the local Juarez cartel, and the powerful Sinaloa cartel, headed by Mexico's most wanted drug boss, Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman.

Drug battles often continue behind bars.

More than 40,000 people have died in drug-related killing since Mexican President Felipe Calderon sent in the army to crush the cartels shortly after taking office in late 2006. Roughly a quarter of the deaths have been in Ciudad Juarez.

Despite the violence, the city's mayor, Hector Murguia, said the federal police would start being withdrawn from Ciudad Juarez in September. Federal police have been in charge of security in the city since early 2010.

Later, municipal police chief Julian Leyzaola, said federal police officers opened fire on his vehicle when he arrived to investigate the prison fight.

"I suddenly heard bursts of fire toward my vehicle," Leyzaola told reporters. "There was a group of 10 to 15 of them and they were all shooting at me."

The state's ministry of public security, which is in charge of federal police, did not immediately respond for comment.

Security has been a serious problem in prisons in Mexico, which are prone to outbreaks of violence and escapes.

Earlier this month, 59 inmates broke out of prison and a further seven were killed in Nuevo Laredo, a northeastern city also near the Texas border.

Backpacking boots or any of the traditional hiking boots may have their place. That place just isn?t on my feet. If you don?t have specific problems with your ankles, there isn?t snow on the ground, and you don?t carry more than thirty pounds on your back, try running shoes. You?ll be so happy that you did.
Backpacking or hiking boots are heavy, hot, stinky, and stay wet forever. Decent running shoes can be as light as one pound per pair, while most hiking boots top three pounds. Army research showed that a pound on your feet is like five on your back (some say six), so three-pound boots naturally leave you more tired at the end of the day.
Backpacking Boots And Ankle Support
Some backpackers argue for the necessity of ankle support, but throughout history people managed without stiff ankle-supporting boots. Even if you are carrying thirty pounds on your back, consider the fact that there are people walking around that weigh 60 pounds more than you, and without problems. It is an issue of weak ankles, not a lack of support. To solve this problem, try walking a little each week on uneven ground (not in the mall).
While some may really need hiking boots, why not be sure your ankle problems are not just due to a lack of exercise before you settle for backpacking in heavy boots. It is true you may need hiking boots if you carry more than thirty pounds when you backpack. The solution to that is to cut the weight down.

They also can be easily rinsed out and dried quickly. My feet won?t tolerate hotter socks now, although I do bring a warmer pair for sleeping or for cold weather.
Unless you have size 13 feet, you should be able to find good running or hiking shoes that are under two pounds per pair. Carry a kitchen scale to the shoe store if you have to. Unfortunately, catalogs sometimes don?t show weights, so you?ll have to guess which hiking shoes are lighter based on the description and photo.
The higher quality shoes have soles stitched to the uppers. Look under the insoles to check this. A removable insole is another sign of quality shoes. Usually you can find a good pair of running shoes under 28 ounces and under $80, or half of that on closeouts.
Until you try it, you won?t know how liberating it is to ditch the heavy pack and heavy boots and hit the trail in running shoes. Go more miles more comfortably. Run up a hill just to see what?s there. I haven?t yet met a person who has tried backpacking in hiking shoes or running shoes ? and then returned to backpacking boots.

I have been on the hunt for good slow cooker recipes for a long time, and I can't seem to find anything that I like. I guess it is because I am very picky about what I like to eat,

I have been on the hunt for good slow cooker recipes for a long time, and I can't seem to find anything that I like. I guess it is because I am very picky about what I like to eat, and many of the recipes that I come upon have something in them that I just can't stomach. I am still searching though, and I hope to come up with at least ten of them that are really good and really easy to throw together. There are just days when I know I have a lot of work to do and I would rather spend my free time with my little girl than by cooking a meal.

Slow cooker recipes are everywhere, and you can find them with a simple search online. The most common type are recipes for stew, but they all seem to have the same ingredients. The problem that I have is that I do not like cooked onions, and if a recipe calls for them, I won't make it. My husband thinks I'm being silly, but I just can't eat them. I like them raw on a burger or hotdog, but I cannot stand to have them in slow cooker recipes. Unfortunately, this cuts down my options quite substantially.

You may not be as picky as I am, and if that is the case, you should have no problem finding slow cooker recipes that you will love to make for your family. For the most part, you simply add the ingredients to your cooker, turn it on and let it go all day. You shouldn't even have to stir it. You can even find great slow cooker recipes in your local grocery store. They have kits that are already put together and you usually find them in the freezer section. All you have to do is dump the contents into your crock-pot and turn it on. It doesn't get much easier than that.

I may end up having to find slow cooker recipes that I can alter. Though this might take some doing, I'm sure there is something I can do. I am not a chef, but I do know how to experiment, even if it means ordering pizza a few nights when a few of my creations have not worked out like I had hoped they did. In the mean time, I will continue to search for slow cooker recipes that might be able to be used, and perhaps try a few from the grocery store.

StarCraft II: MVP joins Complexity Starcraft 2 partnership | SK Gaming

In a surprise announcement that has the entire Starcraft 2 community giddy with excitement, premier North American eSports organization Complexity Gaming, and South Korean Starcraft 2 team MvP, has announced a joint partnership with two of MvP's players.

Both Min-Soo 'Genius' Jung and Soo Ho 'DongRaeGu' Park will from now on sport a coL.MvP tag for their ingame names and will represent both Complexity and MvP in future Starcraft 2 tournaments not only in South Korea, but also all over the world.

The Protoss powerhouse 'Genius', is mostly known for his first place finish at Blizzcon 2010 for Starcraft 2 after defeating the Chinese Terran beast Yi 'Loner' Dai. He would go on to compete in the Global Starcraft 2 League, where he would reach the round of 8 in the second GSL Open, and so far this has been his highest achievement in the GSL.

The Zerg monster 'DongRaeGu' or 'DRG', as he is called by his loving fans, is notorious for his hilarious antics on screen, but also for his monster like ability to destroy his opponents. His greatest achievement in tournaments would be his first place finish at the LG Cinema 3D Special League, where he took home $9320 after defeating Seung-Chul 'sC' Kim.

Seventeen dead in Norway bomb and gun attack (Reuters)

OSLO, July 23 (Reuters) ? A gunman dressed in police uniform opened fire at a youth camp of Norway's ruling political party Friday, killing at least 10 people, hours after a bomb killed seven in the government district in the capital Oslo.

Witnesses said the gunman, identified by police as a 32-year-old Norwegian, moved across the small, wooded Utoeya holiday island firing at random at young people gathered for a meeting of the youth group of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg's ruling Labor party.

Norwegian television TV2 said the gunman, described as tall and blond, had links to right-wing extremism.

It was the biggest attack in Western Europe since the 2005 London transport bombings that killed 52.

"I saw young people running around, jumping into the water," Kristine Melby, who lives across the narrow channel on the Norwegian mainland, told Al Jazeera television. "We heard people screaming."

Many sought shelter in buildings as shots echoed across the island, ran into the woods or tried to swim to safety.

"There was a lot of shooting ... We hid under a bed. It was very terrifying," a young woman at the camp told British Sky television.

Police arrested the gunman, who they believed was also linked to the bombing, and later found undetonated explosives on the island, to the northwest of Oslo.

The bomb, which shook the city center in mid-afternoon, blew out the windows of the prime minister's building and damaged the finance and oil ministry buildings. Stoltenberg was not in the building at the time.

"People ran in panic," said bystander Kjersti Vedun.

With police advising people to evacuate central Oslo, and some soldiers taking up positions on the streets, the usually sleepy capital was gripped by fear of fresh attacks. Streets were strewn with shattered masonry, glass and twisted steel.

"It is the most violent event to strike Norway since World War Two," said Geir Bekkevold, an opposition parliamentarian for the Christian Peoples Party.

"I have a message to the one who attacked us and those who were behind this," Prime Minister Stoltenberg said in a televised news conference. "No one will bomb us to silence, no one will shoot us to silence."

He declined to speculate on who had been involved.

OKLAHOMA BOMBING

NUPI Senior Research Fellow Jakub Godzimirski said he suspected a right-winger, rather than any Islamist group. Right wing groups have grown up in Norway and elsewhere in northern Europe around the issue of immigration.

"It would be very odd for Islamists to have a local political angle. The attack on the Labor youth meeting suggests it's something else. If Islamists wanted to attack, they could have set off a bomb in a nearby shopping mall rather than a remote island."

Right-wing militancy has generated sporadic attacks in other countries, including the United States. In 1995, 168 people were killed when Timothy McVeigh detonated a truck bomb at a federal building in Oklahoma City.

Deputy Oslo police chief Sveining Sponheim told reporters that the gunman in the Utoeya shootings had been disguised in a blue police-style uniform but had never been a police officer.

Police searched a flat in west Oslo where the man lived, and evacuated some neighbors.

NATO member Norway has been the target of threats before over its involvement in conflicts in Afghanistan and Libya.

Violence or the threat of it has already come to the other Nordic states: a botched bomb attack took place in the Swedish capital Stockholm last December and the bomber was killed.

Denmark has received repeated threats after a newspaper published cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad in late 2005, angering Muslims worldwide.

In Oslo, the building of a publisher which recently put out a translation of a Danish book on the cartoon controversy was also affected, but was apparently not the target.

The Oslo district attacked is the very heart of power in Norway. Nevertheless, security is not tight in a country unused to such violence and better known for awarding the Nobel Peace Prize and mediating in conflicts, including the Middle East and Sri Lanka.
