Neil Armstrong: A giant leap for modesty

The humility of Neil Armstrong after his moonwalk is a model for a balanced approach to giving credit for great achievements.

In this age of celebrity obsession, it is rare for heroic figures to be honored for their humility. Yet the family of Neil Armstrong asked after his death last week that the former astronaut be remembered for his modesty as much as for his accomplishment in landing the Eagle spacecraft on the moon and being the first person to walk on another celestial body.

His famous reluctance to revel in the limelight has set an important marker in a wider debate about the source of all great achievement, or when a person deserves credit for a great deed, discovery, invention, or creative work.

Apple, for example, won a $1 billion suit last week against Samsung for the stealing of patented ideas used in the iPhone. President Obama recently told entrepreneurs that they ?didn?t build? their businesses without the help of government. And almost monthly in the publishing industry, another case of an author plagiarizing a copyrighted work is exposed.

With these kinds of concerns about the origins of useful ideas or acts, Mr. Armstrong?s self-effacing modesty remains instructive.

He said the moon landing in July 1969 was not so much his doing as simply an ?achievement that a third of a million people had been working for a decade to accomplish.? All the scientists, engineers, and others connected to space exploration are the unsung heroes of historic feats in space. His role was significant but perhaps less important than, say, the designing of the Saturn rocket.

Armstrong?s modesty echoes that of Sir Issac Newton, who discovered calculus and the laws of gravitation and later wrote to his rival, Robert Hooke: ?If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.?

Breakthroughs in thought or action are most often built on the past achievements of others. But society is benefited by giving credit and allowing a monopoly privilege to an idea in order to serve a public purpose: encouraging further breakthroughs.

Today?s competition for new ideas in the global economy has become so fierce that it severely challenges the intellectual property system that first arose in the 18th century. A new balance is needed between a right to one?s originality and the free flow of ideas that spurs originality.

Despite Armstrong?s image as a rugged individual who mastered spaceflight, he argued for collaboration in modern-day achievements. His boyhood hero was Charles Lindbergh, another heroic icon of aeronautics; but by the 1960s, science and technology had become too complex to sustain the idea of great solo acts. Even Steve Jobs said his greatest achievement would be leaving behind a team at Apple that can keep coming up with more cool designs.

The very nature of ideas is that they are universal enough for anyone to discover and, once known, can be shared for the benefit of all. Society must decide how much to grant credit or lock in ownership of ideas in order to encourage more progress.

The one time that Armstrong spoke out forcefully after his moon landing was to decry budget cuts to the space program. He spoke of ?our investment? in space exploration. It was as if he once again was noting his own ?small step? in reaching the moon while also paying tribute to the larger cause, a ?giant leap for mankind.?

Those historic words were well chosen by a man who lived them.

Why Dating Mr. Wrong Isn't So Bad | Love Twenty

After every relationship, you are left wondering what went wrong. You blame the ex for everything or try to figure out your own mistakes. But then time goes by and you meet someone new, and you suddenly realize why it didn?t work with the old guy.

Dating the wrong person teaches you about the right one. You learn what you want in a partner and in a relationship overall, and you discover a lot about yourself with each breakup. So as much as we all want to avoid ever dating duds again?and would also prefer not to waste the calories on post-break-up junk food?we kind of have to.

A few Mr. Wrongs can do some good. With every flop comes a lesson. We?re not all relationship gurus from the get-go, myself included. Everything I write about is what I?ve learned from past experiences. Like most girls, I bought into a fantasy of finding a great guy immediately, and some girls do get lucky and find great catches immediately, but most of us have to test out the waters.

By having some letdowns, you learn to appreciate those who really take the time and care about you. You also stop accepting immature behavior. Best of all, you intuitively know when you?ve finally found that one good guy.

So stop seeing any guy as a mistake. He carried with him a lesson.

Of course I?m not saying you should go out and purposely date someone who is bad for you. Most of us go into relationships with the intention of it working and therefore we see the future boyfriend as a good fit for us. Unfortunately (or fortunately) sometimes the fit isn?t quite right in the end?you just don?t know it at first. By dating a few bad seeds, you can eventually see what is worth your time and what isn?t.

After a few lessons and letdowns, you become more self-aware and understand how relationships operate. When you meet a good guy and begin to date, you appreciate the relationship that much more. Plus chances are you?ve both had some interesting experiences that have molded you into the people you are now. Maybe you two would not have been right for each other years ago. You needed some growing up to do, and with that comes a mature, loving relationship.

Don?t feel bad about a relationship ending. You may feel like your world is dilapidating, but it?s really just growing. The Mr. Wrongs really do lead you to what you want.

Have your Mr. Wrongs led you to a Mr. Right?

Beware of health stats leading to bans | Columnists | Opinion ...

HEAL report

Report an error

Let?s take a look at the Ottawa Public Health report Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL).

That?s the massive document that inspired Coca-Cola to write letters of concern to the mayor, and also pushed Ottawa?s medical officer of health, Isra Levy, to publicly muse on implementing a soda ban.

The study?s main focus is compiling statistics about what Ottawa residents are up to in their daily lives and then seeing how those results compare to what guidelines say we should be doing.

For instance: ?Approximately, 71% of mothers reported some breastfeeding for at least six months; however, only 41% of mothers exclusively breastfed their last baby for at least the recommended six months.?

Now some may balk that breastfeeding is something done within the home. But in providing programs offering care for new mothers, particularly those lacking family support, one can see why statistics pertaining to breastfeeding would be useful. It informs how the city tailors motherhood programs.

(Although I?ve always found it bizarre that in the 21st century we need to give classes to women to do things that they?ve been doing naturally since the beginning of human history.)

Then there are statistics that can definitely benefit the way services are crafted, but we have to be careful how we use them.

Take this: ?Only 60% of students in Ottawa (Grades 7 to 12) reported eating breakfast all five of the previous school days.? And: ?Only one in five students reported that they did not drink sugar-sweetened beverages in the past week.?

These clearly inform school breakfast programs. Ideally, parents should be the only ones providing breakfast to kids. But it doesn?t always work that way. And since we?re already paying for public education for these kids, it?s also wise to give them the energy to stay focused so they can develop the tools to leave the nest (both the family and government nest). We just don?t want to use this data as further justification to wedge ourselves into people?s home lives.

Then we get to tracking things that exclusively concern adults and their choices.

Like ?more than half of Ottawa adults are not meeting the recommended vegetable and fruit intake levels as per Eating Well with Canada?s Food Guide recommendations.?

And ?[o]nce at home, nearly half of adults spent 15 hours or more per week watching television or using the computer outside of work or school.?

Which leads us to ... to what? Nothing. Those are all just examples of how people choose to live their lives. Yet it?s these sorts of statistics that are the impetus for people like Levy to conceive of potential bans.

Although OPH acknowledges this. They do write about ?community barriers,? but also have statistics to show the role choice plays in keeping fit.

?The top three individual-level barriers to physical activity reported by Ottawa residents were lack of time (74%), lack of energy (60%) and lack of interest or motivation (57%).?

It?s also interesting to note the considerable resources used to develop this report. The report runs 191 pages. It clearly took some time to make. The report was written by four OPH staff members. However, another 16 staff members also contributed to the project. They also brought on an outside graphics designer. That?s a lot of time. That?s a lot of money.

The city is clearly interested in your personal health and knows a lot about your health trends. The only question is where that knowledge and interest takes them. Fingers crossed it doesn?t lead to more proposed bans.

?

Do you think the city's Healthy Eating Active Living report is a good use of taxpayer dollars?

All eyes on Isaac as Republican convention approaches

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Mitt Romney's Republican National Convention sputters to life with the lonely banging of a gavel in a mostly empty hall, hardly the opening splash intended for the nation. With a sprawling and strengthening storm bearing down on the region, the party hastily rewrote the convention script to present the extravaganza's prime rituals and headline speakers later in the week ? Tropical Storm Isaac willing.

Nothing was certain Monday as the storm carved an unpredictable path toward the Gulf of Mexico, forcing planners to compress four days of events into three and otherwise improvise.

It was a complication, at best, for a party determined to cast the close election as a referendum on President Barack Obama's economic stewardship and Romney as the best hope for jobs and prosperity.

From New Hampshire, where he and his wife, Ann, rehearsed their convention speeches in a high school auditorium, Romney expressed worry about the people in Isaac's way while predicting a "great convention" nonetheless. Other officials put on a brave face, too.

But Sally Bradshaw, a Florida Republican and longtime senior aide to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, was not so sanguine. "It's a mess all around and it's fraught with risk," she said. "It's not good for anybody ? particularly the people impacted by the storm."

The concern was two-fold: that Tampa, hosting thousands of GOP delegates, would get sideswiped by the storm; and that it would be unseemly to engage in days of political celebration if Isaac made a destructive landfall anywhere on U.S. soil.

"You can tone down the happy-days-are-here-again a bit," said Rich Galen, a veteran Republican consultant in Washington. "Maybe you don't have the biggest balloon drop in history."

Said Reince Priebus, the Republican National Committee chairman: "We're moving forward, but we are going to be nimble." Real estate developer Donald Trump, who had been scheduled to speak Monday, was dropped from the convention program because of the reshuffling.

Republicans hoped another distracting tempest would blow over, too, concerning abortion. The Obama campaign and its allies have doubled down in efforts to exploit remarks more than a week ago by Rep. Todd Akin, the GOP's candidate for a Senate seat from Missouri, that a woman's body has a way of preventing pregnancy in the case of a "legitimate rape." The claim is unsupported by medical evidence. The congressman quickly apologized but resisted Romney's pressure to drop out of the race.

Romney, in a Fox interview, said in comments broadcast Sunday that the fallout over Akin's remarks "hurts our party and I think is damaging to women," adding: "It really is sad, isn't it? With all the issues that America faces, for the Obama campaign to continue to stoop to such a low level."

In the reworked convention schedule released early Sunday evening, organizers planned a pro forma opening Monday afternoon, lasting no more than five minutes or so. Priebus was to gavel the convention to order, then immediately recess. Few delegates were expected to attend. In the only bit of convention-hall theater, a debt clock was to be set in motion, to tally the nation's red ink during the convention.

Speakers who had been scheduled for Monday were to start making the case against Obama, under the day's theme, "we can do better." That theme now will be threaded through the following three days, said Romney adviser Russ Schriefer, in charge of the convention's planning. "Even though the days will be abbreviated, I absolutely believe we'll be able to get our message out," he said.

The roll call of state delegations affirming Romney as the party's nominee now is to unfold Tuesday, an evening capped by speeches from Ann Romney and an assortment of GOP governors. Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, gets the prime-time spotlight Wednesday and Romney closes out the spectacle Thursday night, his springboard into the final leg of the contest. That's all if the storm brings no further complications.

So far, many delegates were taking the shakeup in stride. "People are pretty resilient, and people knew going in that there were some weather issues," said Pat Shortridge, the Minnesota state GOP chairman, from Lino Lakes, Minn. "I don't think it's dampened enthusiasm."

Weather was recognized as potential trouble when Republicans chose to hold their convention in politically vital Florida during hurricane season, a decision made well before Romney locked up the nomination. And it's clear that memories of Hurricane Katrina, and the failure of a Republican administration to respond effectively to its Gulf Coast devastation in 2005, are hanging over Tampa now. Republicans have been so sensitive to the political risks from natural disasters that they delayed the start of their national convention by a day in 2008, when Hurricane Gustav bore down on the Gulf, far from their meeting in Minnesota.

And it surely wasn't lost on Tampa convention organizers that a gathering storm gave Obama an opportunity to show leadership. As the forecast worsened, the president directed the Federal Emergency Management Agency to help.

"The president also told the governor to let him know if there are any unmet needs or additional resources the administration could provide, including in support of efforts to ensure the safety of those visiting the state for the Republican National Convention," the White House said Sunday.

Both sides grappled with how to conduct their politicking in the face of the storm. Vice President Joe Biden, who had been prepared to make as much political hay as possible over the Republican convention, canceled a campaign swing through Florida on Monday and Tuesday.

Polls find a tight race, and it's one that is likely to be settled in a small number of battleground states.

An estimated $500 million has been spent on television commercials so far by the two candidates, their parties and supporting outside groups, nearly all of it in Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, New Hampshire, Ohio, Iowa, Colorado and Nevada. Those states account for 100 electoral votes out of the 270 needed to win the White House. Republicans hope to expand the electoral map to include Pennsylvania, Michigan, perhaps Ryan's Wisconsin and even Minnesota, states with 68 electoral votes combined.

All four are usually reliably Democratic in presidential campaigns. Yet Romney has a financial advantage over the president, according to the most recent fundraising reports, and a move by the Republicans into any of them could force Obama to dip into his own campaign treasury in regions he has considered relatively safe.

Republican office-holders past and present said the economy is the key if Romney is to expand his appeal to women and Hispanic voters.

"We have to point out that the unemployment rate among young women is now 16 percent, that the unemployment rate among Hispanics is very high, that jobs and the economy are more important, perhaps, than maybe other issues," said Arizona Sen. John McCain, who lost to Obama in 2008.

Bush agreed, saying that Romney "can make inroads if he focuses on how do we create a climate of job creation and economic growth." If he succeeds, "I think people will move back towards the Republican side," the former Florida governor added.

Obama leads Romney among female voters and by an overwhelming margin among Hispanics, but trails substantially among men.
