Israel at Peace; America?s Nightmare! Israel First is Too Big to Fail

Israel at Peace; America?s Nightmare! Israel First is Too Big to Fail

by Sami Jamil Jadallah

The other night I had late dinner with a friend visiting from out of town. I went home and crashed after a long day. What a night it was?I had America?s nightmare!

I had America?s nightmare, and I almost had a heart attack from the shock of the unexpected events. Believe it or not I dreamt that Israel finally agreed to peace with the Palestinians. I dreamt that Israel agreed to a two state solution.

I had America?s nightmare when I dreamt that Israel agreed to vacate the Jewish Occupied West Bank ending its reign of terror withdrawing its army and its armed terrorists settlers.

I had America?s nightmare when I dreamt that Israel agreed to end its illegal and criminal siege of Gaza.

I had America?s nightmare when I dreamt that Israel agreed to share an open Jerusalem with the Palestinians as joint capital, and I had America?s nightmare when I dreamt that Israel agreed to establish normal and formal relations with the Arabs and Muslims from Morocco to Saudi Arabia to Kuwait to Pakistan, Iran, and Indonesia.

I wasn?t worried about Israel and its citizens because I knew they would be fine in peace.

No, instead I was worried about the American Jewish leadership and community, and how they would manage a world with Israel at peace!

I wondered what would happen to all those American politicians who take the mandated pilgrim to Israel before running for a national office, to put on the yarmulke and pledge allegiance to Israel First. The American politicians who visit Yad Vashem and pledge unconditional financial, military and political support to Israel, while perpetuating the Holocaust Industry to justify criminal policies against the Palestinians.

What will happen? What will happen to a free and once again, independent America that is a master of its own destiny once more? Will its national politicians and political candidates and key media personalities learn to live with self-respect once more?

In my dream, I really felt sorry for Israel?s friends in the US, for the Jewish lobby, for the Jewish leadership and community, and I wondered what these folks will do now that Israel is at peace with itself and with its neighbors?

I wondered what would happen now that the Jewish community and the Jewish millionaires will stop funneling tens of millions into AIPAC in support of its foreign and domestic agendas? What will happen to AIPAC now that Israel is at peace, safe and secure? What will it market and sell to its members now that Israel is at peace? Perhaps marketing kosher hotdogs to compete with the ones offered at Price Club for $1.59? I began to cry for them out of sorry and pity!

Tears poured from my eyes as I contemplated the fate and fortune of these pandering politicians who put Israel First and America Last! I wondered?could these politicians even think on own without getting instructions from AIPAC and its army on Capital Hill?

I wondered?could these politicians re-learn to put America First? I felt pity for these new orphans as they found themselves without sponsors and without masters.

I cried out of sheer pity for the likes of Alan Dershowitz and wondered what this Harvard law professor will do now that he no longer has a cause to profit from? I wondered if he would now take on the US administration and the National Defense Authorization Act, which allows the military to detain without charges and trials ?terrorist suspects?.

I felt even more sorry for Daniel Pipes (he believes Barack Obama is a closet Muslim)? the man who made a name for himself by spreading lies and false claims to demonize Arabs and Muslims. I wondered?how could he continue to fund his organization Middle East Forum and his campus spy network Campus Watch?

I felt much sadness as I wondered what would happen to the likes of Steve Emerson and his Investigative Project and Robert Spencer of Jihad Watch. I felt sorrow as I wondered what would happen to Rita Katz and her SITE Intelligence Group. What will happen to the Zionist Organization of America, the American Jewish Committee, American Jewish Congress, and Center for American Progress, CAMERA-Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America, and the many who made Islamist terrorism a thriving business for themselves and their cause, Israel?

My God, I wondered what would happen to the man, Dennis Ross who did everything in his power to make sure peace could never take place. My God I thought how would the Washington Institute for Near East Policy stay in business churning policy decisions for American administrations, one after another?

I could not help but remember, almost with fondness, Abraham Foxman and his Anti-Defamation League?what will he do now? Will he and the tens of thousands involved in the ?Israel First? Industry do with themselves? Will they join the tens of millions of Americans who lost their jobs because their country did not have enough money to spend at home, but somehow came up with trillions to spend abroad on Israel?s wars?

America?s nightmare was like no others I ever had. I felt sick for the American Jewish leadership that no longer has a cause to sell?that no longer utilizes its hate factories for Arabs and Muslims. I thought, Abe Foxman will always have a special place in my heart?after all he is such a lovable guy.

Oh, and I almost forgot about CNN and Fox News! I almost forgot about Wolf Blitzer, John King, Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck! And I wondered what agenda these guys will have now that Israel is at peace.

Then I remembered the Evangelical Christian Zionists and their agenda for Israel, for the Jews and for the Palestinians. What would happen to their Armageddon and their expectation of death or conversion of the Jews and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians? And I wondered if Pat Robertson and John Hagee would now spend the troves of money they have collected on their own community since they can no longer spend it on Israeli settlers. And of course I wondered if Jesus Christ will continue to make his weekly visit to Pat Robertson at his mansion in Virginia Beach for a chat and advice on the affairs of Christianity (Robertson claimed Jesus makes frequent visits with him).

I woke up startled and realized that Israel at peace is an industry that simply will not disappear. Israel is an American industry that is just too big to fail. With Israel at peace, too many names and organizations would disappear; too much money would disappear from election campaigns. America and the mainstream media would have to learn and discover that America should be First. That America and its people deserve the priorities they gave up for so long in favor of putting Israel First.

And then I said to myself there is no way. There are too many people, too may organizations, politicians feeding and profiting?too many Wall Streeters and Ponzi schemers, it is not Israel they all care about, it is the power and influence over America what drives the industry called ?Israel First?.

I went to the kitchen to make my morning coffee, and after the second cup, I understood why there is no peace in the Middle East?

There would just be too many losers in America, with Israel at peace.

Salam, Peace, Shalom, Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas and Joyful Kwanzaa.

New GA law requires safety features on golf carts

By DORIE TURNER and KATE BRUMBACK
Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) - Golf cart owners in Georgia will soon have stricter requirements to follow if they plan to drive their carts on roadways.

A new law taking effect Jan. 1 creates a separate classification of personal transportation vehicles for golf carts. It also sets standards for towns and counties wanting to create ordinances allowing drivers to use the carts on residential streets and multi-purpose pathways. The law requires that golf carts have braking systems, a reverse warning device, tail lamps, a horn and hip restraints.

The bill was signed into law by Gov. Nathan Deal this year after his predecessor, Gov. Sonny Perdue, vetoed a similar measure last year. It had backing from 1 of Georgia's key industries - golf cart manufacturing.

No snow, just rain for Central Texas

Parts of Texas are expected to get a sprinkling of snow today, but weather experts said the San Antonio region will get only cold rain.

?You'll have to go about 300 miles to the northwest if you want to see snow,? said David Schumacher with the National Weather Service. ?There's no chance of snow anywhere in the area, in the Hill Country or San Antonio.?

Forecasters on Thursday said the Hill Country could get light snowfall Christmas Eve morning thanks to a cold front that lingered in the area for several days. But on Saturday, Schumacher said the air was too warm and moist.

Most of the country is expected to be without snow today, with light scatterings predicted for Texas, New Mexico and the Great Lakes region.

?Other than that, there's not much snow around,? Schumacher said. ?It's a little bit unusual.?

?

Winds were expected to calm slightly today and temperatures will be slightly warmer with a high of 52 as cloud coverage breaks in the afternoon. Rain chances also will drop this Christmas Day.

Hackers claim Siri port to iPhone 4 avoids copyright infringement - AppleInsider

By Slash Lane

Published: 02:53 PM EST (11:53 AM PST) Hackers have managed to successfully port Apple's Siri personal assistant to a device other than the iPhone 4S, and they claim to have done it without violating any copyright laws.

A tool called Spire from developer "chpwn" can enable iPhone 4 users to run Apple's personal assistant application, Siri, on their handset. Apple still requires authorization for use of Siri, so users must work around this by inserting information from an iPhone 4S and using a proxy server address.

"Spire uses a new method to obtain the files necessary for Siri, so it doesn't have the copyright issues encountered by previous attempts," they wrote. "Similarly, rather than directing all of your traffic through a specific proxy server (and the associated privacy issues), Spire allows you to specify your own proxy server."

The Siri hack was made possible because of a new build of iOS 5.0.1 that Apple quietly released for the iPhone 4S, but quickly pulled. Hackers subsequently discovered that the update allowed a user to collect the files needed for a Siri port without having to break Apple's copyright.

Hackers had previously cracked Siri and offered the ability to port the voice recognition software to the iPhone 4 and fourth-generation iPod touch. But that previous method relied on tools that may have broken Apple's copyrighted works.

Those methods also required users to rely on a fixed proxy server in order to have Siri communicate with Apple's own servers. But this raised privacy concerns, as a user's voice data could be unknowingly intercepted by a third party.

But now the files come directly from Apple's servers, which has led hackers like "chpwn" to believe they are not infringing on the company's copyright. And users can set up their own proxy server to avoid potential security issues.

Bringing Siri to an iPhone 4 requires that users "jailbreak" their device, a term used to describe hacking iOS to allow users to run unauthorized code. Jailbreaking is a potentially warranty voiding process that allows greater customization and freedom, with new features like themes and applications not approved by Apple, but it can also lead to security issues for less experienced users.

Users can set up their own proxy if they already own an iPhone 4S and want to have Siri functionality on another iOS device, or if they have a friend with an iPhone 4S that would share their authentication tokens. The hacker responsible for the Spire tool said they believe some for-pay service will begin to crop up online, allowing users to rent space on a Siri proxy server attached to an iPhone 4S device.

Another possibility, they said, is hackers might find a way to replace Siri entirely, and instead rely on something like Google Chrome's speech recognition application programming interface.

"Spire is far from perfect, but at least at this point in time, it's the best that I can do," they said. "Maybe in the future someone will find a way to evade the authorization requirement, but from my position here that's unlikely."

(AP) ? London's subway drivers walked out over a pay dispute Monday, causing trouble for thousands of shoppers out to take advantage of traditional Boxing Day sales.

Transport for London warned that shoppers seeking bargains in the capital's shopping centers face "significant disruption." Several subway lines have been suspended, and limited services are operating on the rest of the network.

The ASLEF union is staging the one-day strike to demand extra pay as well as a day off for members working on the public holiday.

The London Underground ? the organization that manages the subway system ? condemned the move, saying it was pointless and demonstrated "a complete disregard for our customers." Authorities said extra buses are running in the main shopping areas to cater to the increased flow of travelers on one of the year's busiest shopping days.

Despite the disruptions, large crowds of shoppers ? some lining up from midnight ? started flooding department stores in London and other British cities as soon as doors opened early Monday.

Selfridges, one of Britain's most popular department stores, reported its biggest ever first hour of trading Monday morning.

In northwest London, the Brent Cross shopping center said that 10,000 people had piled through its doors within an hour of opening.

The ASLEF union plans to stage three more strikes in January and February if the dispute is not resolved.

South Africa: Rhino horns poisoned to thwart poachers

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa ? The owner of an exotic game reserve in South Africa has taking a drastic step in a bid to prevent rhino poaching: he has injected his rhinos' horns with poison.

Damian Vergnaud, owner of?Inverdoorn reserve near Cape Town, said he approached scientists and a vet to work towards finding a substance that would deter poachers.

A record number of rhinos have been killed for their horns this year in South Africa, which has more rhinos than any other country.?The poaching is fueled by demand for rhino horns in Vietnam?and other Asian countries, where they are used in traditional medicine despite the fact that experts say they have no medicinal value.

More from GlobalPost: South Africa: rhino poaching at record high

Vergnaud told the South African Press Association that he decided not to dehorn his rhinos, like some game reserves have done, because it is "very painful" and "traumatizing" for the animals.

"I really wanted to create a different defense system," he told SAPA.

In tests,?Vergnaud injected his rhinos' horns with ?a combination of three non-lethal substances: one with a terrible taste, one to make a horn visible on an X-ray machine, and one that is a dye, the same dye used to foil cash-in-transit robbers.?

"We hope that it will inform poachers, it [poaching at the reserve] is going to be a waste of time," Vergnaud said.

Vergnaud has offered to share his home-brewed poacher repellent with other game reserve owners looking to protect this endangered animal.

Panamanian Gabriel G?mez upgrades Philadelphia Union midfield

The Philadelphia Union upgraded its midfield Wednesday with the signing of Panamanian Gabriel G?mez, who was a key figure in his country?s run to the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals.

G?mez, 27, joins the Union from Mexican second division club Indios de Ciudad Ju?rez. He battled injury during the fall season but still had three goals in eight games as Indios finished 13th out of 16 teams.

He also has played professionally in his native country, Colombia, Portugal and Cyprus.

Terms of his contract with Philadelphia weren?t disclosed.

G?mez has been capped 74 times by Panama and scored twice at last summer?s Gold Cup, including on a penalty kick in the 2-1 group stage upset of the U.S.

UK authorities see no breast implant cancer link (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Women with breast implants made by a now defunct French company have no reason to have them removed but should seek medical advice if they believe they have ruptured, British health officials said Wednesday.

French officials have said they will decide soon whether to offer surgery to remove the Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) implants from up to 30,000 women in France if research finds that the silicone they are made of might cause cancer.

Up to 300,000 PIP implants, which are used in cosmetic surgery to enhance breast size or replace lost breast tissue, were sold worldwide before PIP went into administration last year and use of the implants was halted.

In France, eight cases of cancer have appeared in women with PIP breast implants, sparking a health scare and prompting an inquiry by the country's National Cancer Institute (NCI).

But Britain's drugs watchdog the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said there was "insufficient evidence to indicate any association with cancer" .

"There is currently no evidence to support routine removal of PIP or any other type of silicone gel breast implants," a spokeswoman said.

The MHRA, a government agency responsible for ensuring that medicines and medical devices work and are safe, said it was aware of reports in France that a woman who had PIP breast implants recently died from anaplastic large cell lymphoma, or ALCL -- a rare form of cancer which affects cells from the immune system.

It said however that its own tests in 2010 on PIP silicone gel breast implants found no evidence of the potential to cause cancer or chemical toxicity of the filler material inside them.

"The MHRA's current advice continues to be that women who have questions about their breasts or think their implants may have ruptured, should seek clinical advice from their implanting surgeon," the agency said.

French health authorities suspended PIP's marketing and sales of silicone gel breast implants in 2010 after an inspection of the company's manufacturing plant found that most implants made since 2001 were filled with an unauthorized silicone gel and not the originally approved material. The company is no longer trading.

The British Association for Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) said it too had not yet seen evidence demonstrating health problems may have been caused by PIP breast implants, but would "fully assess any that becomes available."

France's health minister Nora Berra said Tuesday the ministry would make a decision this Friday on what to do next, once it has the conclusions of its NCI inquiry.

If a link is established, French social security will pay for all women with the implants to have them removed, she said.

Study shows how B cells may generate antibodies after vaccination

Friday, December 16, 2011

Steve Reiner, MD, professor of Medicine, and Burton Barnett, a doctoral student in the Reiner lab at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, have shown how immune cells, called B lymphocytes, are able to produce daughter cells that are not equal, a finding that might explain how lifelong antibodies are made after vaccination.

How do immune cells make daughter cells that are different form one another, rather than splitting into identical daughter cells? The team's paper, published this week online in Science, shows how one cell type can reliably produce cell diversity. Motile B cells that don't have life-long attachments with other cells, as say a layer of skin cells do, can receive cues from other immune cells, namely helper T cells, so that they attach to each other and influence the outcome of B-cell division. The researchers showed that a T cell forms a temporary attachment to a B cell, which induces the B cell to divide, resulting in daughter cells that are different on the level of the proteins they inherit. The pairing and dividing occurs in the lymphoid organs, such as the spleen, that respond to vaccination.

B cells circulate throughout the body via the bloodstream, and upon infection are recruited to fight the offending germ. During this fight, the recruited B cells must generate multiple types of daughter cells to be effective. One of these cells makes the antibodies that destroy the germ, and are what make vaccinations effective. The other type of cell improves the quality of the antibodies that can be made.

The Penn team found that B cells segregate a transcriptional protein called Bcl6, the protein receptor for interleukin-21, and another protein called atypical PKC to one side of the plane of division during cell replication, generating unequal inheritance of fate-altering molecules by daughter cells. These three proteins tell the B cell which type of daughter cell to become; and by making daughter cells with more or less of these proteins, B cells can give rise to cells that are antibody factories through division.

The team is interested in using this discovery to make better vaccines. They are also expecting that the ability of wandering immune cells to give birth to non-identical daughters may explain how our blood cells can also turn into cancers like leukemia.

HBT: Peavy-Guillen relationship didn't end well

Jake Peavy talked to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune about the White Sox parting ways with manager Ozzie Guillen and replacing him with Robin Ventura, saying he thought the move was necessary because ?things needed to change with the way we did things.?

Peavy prefaced his comments with ?I?m not, in any way, bashing Ozzie? but then went on to say that the manager switch ?needed to happen? and described his relationship with Guillen as a poor one: ?Ozzie didn?t care for me at the end because I was shut down,. It didn?t end on good terms.?

Peavy also hinted at some past issues with pitching coach Don Cooper, but added: ?Look at what Coop has done over the years. It takes time to know someone. I have no problems with [Cooper].?

Which is good, because while Guillen is gone Cooper remains the White Sox?s pitching coach under Ventura.

'The Artist' speaks up with 6 noms to lead Globes (AP)

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. ? Silent film is taking over Hollywood's awards scene. The silent-era tale "The Artist" heads the Golden Globes with six nominations, among them best comedy or musical, and acting honors for its French stars, Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo.

Tied for second-place with five nominations Thursday are the 1960s racial tale "The Help" and George Clooney's Hawaiian family story "The Descendants." Both films are up for best drama, while Clooney was nominated for best dramatic actor and "The Help" earned acting slots for Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain.

Also competing for best drama: Martin Scorsese's Paris adventure "Hugo"; Clooney's political thriller "The Ides of March"; Brad Pitt's baseball chronicle "Moneyball"; and Steven Spielberg's World War I epic "War Horse."

Joining "The Artist" in the best musical or comedy category are: the cancer story "50/50"; Kristen Wiig's wedding romp "Bridesmaids"; Woody Allen's romantic fantasy "Midnight in Paris"; and Michelle Williams' Marilyn Monroe tale "My Week With Marilyn."

Dujardin, who won the best-actor prize for "The Artist" in its premiere at last May's Cannes Film Festival, was nominated for best actor in a musical or comedy. He plays a silent-film star whose career nosedives as talking pictures take over in the late 1920s in "The Artist," which has virtually no spoken dialogue and is shot in the boxy, black-and-white format of the silent era.

The actor called his nomination an "incredible gift."

"To be recognized alongside such brilliant actors is an honor," Dujardin said. "The Golden Globe nomination for `The Artist' has left me speechless!"

"The Artist" also picked up a supporting actress honor for Bejo as a rising star of the sound era. Filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius earned directing and screenplay nominations for the film, which also is up for best musical score.

Clooney has three nominations. Besides best dramatic actor as a neglectful dad tending his daughters in "The Descendants," he's up for directing and screenplay for "The Ides of March." For the acting prize, Clooney will compete against his "Ides" co-star Ryan Gosling, who plays a presidential candidate's aide. Gosling had a second nomination for best musical or comedy actor as a ladies man in the romance "Crazy, Stupid, Love."

Glenn Close is also a dual contender, as best dramatic actress as a woman masquerading as a male butler in the Irish drama "Albert Nobbs" and for best song for writing the lyrics to "Lay Your Head Down," the film's theme tune.

Also nominated for dramatic actress: Davis as a black maid going public with stories about her white employer in "The Help"; Rooney Mara as a traumatized victim-turned-avenger in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"; Meryl Streep as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady"; and Tilda Swinton as a grieving woman coping with her son's terrible deeds in "We Need to Talk About Kevin."

Clooney has another pal in the dramatic actor race, his "Ocean's Eleven" franchise co-star Pitt, who's nominated for his "Moneyball" role as Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane. And Clooney also is competing for best director against his boss in "The Descendants," filmmaker Alexander Payne.

Gosling, Clooney and Pitt are up against Leonardo DiCaprio as FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover in "J. Edgar" and Michael Fassbender as a sex addict in "Shame."

Pitt's romantic partner, Angelina Jolie, picked up a nomination for foreign-language film for her directing debut, the Bosnian war drama "In the Land of Blood and Honey."

Scorsese for "Hugo" and Allen for "Midnight in Paris" join Clooney, Hazanavicius and Payne in the directing category.

"Making `Hugo' was an extraordinary experience for me," said Scorsese, whose tale is a loving nod to early film and French director Georges Melies. "It gave me a chance to work in 3-D, which I've wanted to do since I was young; it allowed me to make a child's adventure, the type of picture that I loved when I was young; and it provided an occasion to pay tribute to one of the cinema's greatest pioneers, Georges Melies."

Though "War Horse" made it in for best drama, Spielberg missed out on a directing nomination.

Spielberg has a consolation prize with a nomination for his first animated film, "The Adventures of Tintin." Other animation nominees are: James McAvoy's "Arthur Christmas," Owen Wilson's "Cars 2," Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek's "Puss in Boots" and Johnny Depp's "Rango."

Along with Gosling and Dujardin, Wilson was nominated for musical or comedy actor as a writer nostalgic for the 1920s France of Hemingway and Fitzgerald in "Midnight in Paris." Also nominated are Brendan Gleeson as a bawdy, rule-breaking Irish cop on a drug investigation in "The Guard" and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a cancer patient aided by an assortment of oddballs in "50/50."

Roman Polanski's domestic showdown "Carnage" earned musical or comedy actress slots for both Jodie Foster and Kate Winslet as mothers squabbling over their sons' schoolyard fight. The other nominees are: Charlize Theron as a delusional woman plotting to win back her high school boyfriend from his wife in "Young Adult"; Wiig as a maid of honor whose life is unraveling in "Bridesmaids"; and Williams as Marilyn Monroe during a chaotic film shoot in "My Week With Marilyn."

Kenneth Branagh as Laurence Olivier, Monroe's exasperated co-star and director on "The Prince and the Showgirl," was nominated for supporting actor. Also in the race: Albert Brooks as a gregarious but ruthless gangster in "Drive"; Jonah Hill as a statistics prodigy in "Moneyball"; Viggo Mortensen as Sigmund Freud in "A Dangerous Method"; and Christopher Plummer as an ailing, elderly father who comes out as gay in "Beginners."

Besides Bejo, supporting-actress nominees include Spencer as a sassy maid in "The Help" and Chastain as her lonely new boss. The other nominees are Janet McTeer as a cross-dressing laborer in "Albert Nobbs" and Shailene Woodley as a troublesome teen in "The Descendants."

Winslet had a second nomination, as best actress in a TV miniseries or movie for "Mildred Pierce." "Downton Abbey" and "Mildred Pierce" tied for the most television nominations with four, with both shows competing for best miniseries or movie.

Several newcomers were among the nominees, including "Boss, "New Girl," "American Horror Story" and "Homeland."

Along with the Screen Actors Guild Award nominations a day earlier, the Globes field helps narrow down prospects for the Academy Awards, whose nominations come out Jan. 24.

With drinks and dinner, the Globes are a laid-back affair for Hollywood's elite compared to the Oscars. The show turned a bit touchy last year as host Ricky Gervais repeatedly made sharp wisecracks about stars and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a group of about 85 entertainment reporters for overseas outlets that presents the Globes.

But Gervais helped give the show a TV ratings boost, and he's been invited back as host for a third-straight year.

Before the nominations announcement, the press group's president, Aida Takla-O'Reilly, joked that Gervais is a "naughty, naughty schoolboy."

Five-time Academy Award and Globe nominee Morgan Freeman ? who won the supporting-actor Oscar for "Million Dollar Baby" and a best-actor Globe for "Driving Miss Daisy" ? will receive the group's Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement at the Jan. 15 ceremony.

Singer Mindy McCready's 5-year-old son in custody (AP)

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. ? By the time Arkansas authorities took country singer Mindy McCready's 5-year-old son from her and into custody on Friday evening, one thing had already become apparent to many in America: McCready's life has come to resemble a bad country song.

Since her emergence in the mid-1990s as a honey-voiced success story out of Nashville, McCready has been increasingly known for her personal foibles instead of her music.

This week's custody battle was the latest in a long saga of personal heartache and brushes with the law.

Florida Department of Children and Families spokeswoman Terri Durdaller wrote in an email Saturday that her agency was working with Arkansas state officials to bring McCready's son, Zander, back to her legal guardian in Florida. His maternal grandmother has been Zander's guardian since 2007.

Officials say he's safe and in good health.

"Zander is in Arkansas and we continue to arrange his swift arrival back to Florida," Durdaller wrote.

In Arkansas, Cleburne County Sheriff Marty Moss said Saturday that McCready didn't have permission to be in the unoccupied summer home where she was found Friday evening with her son. Authorities continue to investigate the matter, he said.

The sheriff's office said in a news release Saturday that it was known McCready had been a visitor to the area and that deputies were working with the U.S. Marshals Service to see if the singer might be there. Authorities located McCready after receiving a report of "possible occupants in a summer home that was supposed to be unoccupied," the news release said.

Authorities said officers entered the home and found McCready and her son in a bedroom closet. A man, David Wilson, was also in the residence. Moss said neither had permission to be in the residence, but neither was arrested at the time.

Moss told the Associated Press on Saturday that the house where all three were found is next door to one where Wilson has stayed in the past. He said he doesn't know if McCready is still in the area and doesn't expect that she will face any charges for being at the unoccupied home.

"I don't expect that to happen," Moss said.

Gayle Inge, Zander's grandmother and McCready's mother, was tearful when she talked about the news by phone Friday night with The Associated Press.

"I'm real excited that he's safe," she said. "But I can't explain what this is like. We feel for Mindy and we feel for Zander."

Inge said that her son ? McCready's half-brother ? texted McCready, who responded with a text that said her mother would never see her again.

"I want to wrap my arms around her and tell her that I love her," Inge said.

McCready, who turned 36 on Wednesday, did not respond to emails Friday and Saturday.

The weekend developments capped a days-long struggle between McCready and several others, including state of Florida child welfare authorities, a Fort Myers, Fla. judge and her own mother.

Authorities say McCready took the boy during a visit late last month to her father's southwest Florida home, where she was allowed to visit the boy. McCready's parents are divorced.

A Florida judge signed an order Thursday telling authorities to take the boy into custody and return him. It's not yet clear whether the singer could face criminal charges.

McCready said earlier in the week that she would not bring her son back from Tennessee, where she has a home, despite violating the custody arrangement. She told the AP that her son had suffered abuse at her mother's house, a claim that Inge vehemently denies.

"I'm doing all this to protect Zander, not stay out of trouble," McCready wrote in an email to the AP on Thursday. "I don't think I should be in trouble for protecting my son in the first place."

McCready told the AP Wednesday night she was in Tennessee and couldn't travel because she is seven months pregnant with twins.

The boy's father, Billy McKnight, told NBC's "Today" show Friday he spoke on the phone with McCready and their boy after the judge's Thursday deadline expired.

"He did sound healthy and OK. He wasn't crying or scared," McKnight said about their son.

"I think she believes she has a case and doesn't realize she's pushing her luck on this one," he said.

McCready and her mother have had a long custody battle over the boy, who was living with McCready's mother.

The singer had provided a series of emails to the AP with Lee County Judge James Seals' ruling to return the boy.

"Mom has violated the court's custody order and we are simply restoring the child back into our custody," the judge wrote. "Nothing more. Nothing less. The court makes no judgment about whether Mom will or will not competently care for the child while in her custody. It only wants the child back where the court placed him."

McCready found fame in the mid-1990s when she moved to Nashville at the age of 18, armed with only her karaoke tapes. Her first album, "Ten Thousand Angels," sold two million copies.

Her next four albums weren't as successful. Her personal troubles began encroaching on her professional success. According to her website, she suffers from severe depression.

McCready fought the release of a tape in which she reportedly talked about former Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens, with whom she had an affair as a teenager.

In August, she filed a libel suit against her mother and the National Enquirer's parent company, American Media Inc., over a story published in the tabloid newspaper that quoted Inge.

And in 2008, McCready was admitted to a hospital after police said she cut her wrists and took several pills in a suicide attempt.

During the TV show "Celebrity Rehab 3" in 2010, McCready came off as a sympathetic figure, and host Dr. Drew Pinsky called her an angel in the season finale.

7 hit shows that have stayed too long at the party (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? This is not a story about ratings. This is a story about shows that have overstayed their welcome.

Shows like "Glee," "House" and "Grey's Anatomy" are still pulling in respectable ratings, but are a shadow of what they once were. For every show like "Freaks and Geeks," "Sports Night" and "Party Down" -- great shows that were canceled too soon -- there are series that risk their ultimate TV legacy by staying too late at the party.

Here's why "Dexter" and six other once-terrific shows are past their prime in primetime.

1. "DEXTER"

That twist in Sunday night's episode -- which we won't spoil in case it's still sitting on your DVR -- gave us pause for a moment. Could this be the thing that turns season six around? Nope. The season's still a mess.

Writers have Dexter Morgan tackling religion and where, or if, it fits into his life.

A guest stint by Mos Def as reformed killer Brother Sam was the highlight of those efforts, but everything else about season six has fallen flat.

That includes the return, sorta, of Dexter's dead serial killer brother; the painfully cheesy therapy sessions for Deb; the embarrassing way the writers have completely decimated Maria LaGuerta; and the mind-boggling reason Dexter has all of a sudden embraced killers like Travis and Trinity's son, Jonah.

If "Dexter" had been a lesser show, around season two or three viewers might have started to question the fact that there seem to be an awful lot of serial killers who a) live in Miami and b) always seem to cross paths with Dexter, even outside his police duties.

"Darkly Dreaming Dexter," the novel in which the Dexter Morgan character was introduced, has become "Deeply Disappointing Dexter."

2. "HOUSE"

He's been in jail and rehab. That's fine if you're, say, playing Iron Man. But if you're a doctor, the go-to diagnostician, this is not the resume you want to present to your patients.

Add in the many, many cast changes, and the fact that the show has fallen into a formula of bringing Hugh Laurie's House to the brink of redemption, only to see him embrace his inner jerk once again, and the diagnosis is clear: After this, the show's eighth season, it is most definitely time for "House" to be surgically removed from the Fox lineup.

3. "GLEE"

The first season of the show was something new and different and fun.

The second season -- it was kind of like that kid you knew in junior high who came back from summer vacation for the first year of high school and had outgrown his awkward phase.

His sudden popularity went to his head, and he became a bully who was berating the Foo Fighters and Kings of Leon because they wouldn't let him play their music on his show.

And he kept relying on stunt casting like Gwyneth Paltrow and Britney Spears, shifting focus away from characters like Jane Lynch's Sue Sylvester, who, in season one, had already secured herself a spot among the all-time great TV characters.

"Glee," by that point, had begun to drink its own Kool-Aid -- or slushies in this instance -- and creator Ryan Murphy's media fights with rock stars were just the most public proof that the show had become too self-important.

Of course, it is important, and wonderful, to see diverse characters on TV, especially for younger viewers. But it is possible for people to not enjoy "Glee" and its many musical interludes and still support the show's point of view.

Popularity and show quality don't always go hand-in-hand, but it is worth noting that the most recent episode of the show is down 2 million viewers from the third season premiere.

4. "THE SIMPSONS"

"The Simpsons" writing staff, on any given day, could probably throw away more good jokes than most comedy writing staffs could come up with in a week. Even in its 23rd season, the show is still funny.

But it's also tired.

We know these characters in and out at this point, from Homer and Bart to neighbor Ned and supporting Springfieldians like Comic Book Guy and Squishee-slinging Kwik-E-Mart owner Apu. While there was a sweet spot when that familiarity allowed writers to do things with the characters that tickled fans, now it just means the show never feels fresh anymore.

And by the time "The Simpsons" hits its 25th season -- it was renewed earlier this year for its 24th and 25th seasons -- we're going to be longing even more for those earlier years when the show could still surprise us.

5. "GOSSIP GIRL"

Doesn't it feel like "Gossip Girl" has been on for longer than five seasons? Yeah, that's not a good thing. Soapy dramas have to walk a fine line between too little action and piling on so much drama that the storylines and characters become tedious and unbelievable.

"GG" has hit the latter point.

Was it the Blair/Dan flirtation that sent the show hurling towards jump-the-shark status? Serena's affairs with her teacher and Nate's married cousin (and Nate himself)? The Blair and Chuck breakup and her eventual engagement to a prince? Jenny dealing drugs? Dan's novel? Yes, yes, yes, yes and yes.

6. "30 ROCK"

Like "The Simpsons," "30 Rock" is still pretty funny. And also as with "The Simpsons," we feel like we know the "30 Rock" gang pretty well as the show prepares to debut its sixth season in January.

Familiarity often opens comedic possibilities for a sitcom. But all it has done for "30 Rock" is open the door to make the characters even more outlandish, and to repeat the same jokes about them over and over. We get it -- Kenneth the Page is backwards, Liz Lemon is perpetually single and career-obsessed, Tracy is crazy, Jenna is pathologically selfish, Frank is gross.

With Alec Baldwin -- who rightfully snagged lead comedy actor Emmys for what were the show's two best seasons -- continuing to say season six will be his last, it's time to enjoy the antics of the show, and the show-within-the-show, for one more season. And then let's send "30 Rock" off to that big cancellation heap in the sky.

7. "GREY'S ANATOMY"

"Grey's Anatomy" has had so many casting changes that we literally can't remember who's still on the show sometimes.

Earlier this year, series creator Shonda Rhimes tweeted the current season would "definitely not" be the series' last.

That's too bad.

And there's been so much partner-swapping, overwrought drama and McDreamy pouts over the problem of the week in his relationship with the angst-addicted Meredith that it's difficult to believe so many viewers have stuck with the show this long, its eighth season.

The Denny/Izzie brain tumor storyline alone would have done some shows in -- and that was back in season five.

Caps fire coach Boudreau; replaced by Dale Hunter (AP)

ARLINGTON, Va. ? The Washington Capitals on Monday fired coach Bruce Boudreau, who won 200 games faster than any coach in modern NHL history but stumbled regularly in the playoffs despite a talent-laden lineup featuring two-time league MVP Alex Ovechkin.

Boudreau was replaced by former Capitals captain Dale Hunter, who was scheduled to lead Monday's practice and make his debut behind the bench Tuesday night when Washington hosts the St. Louis Blues to begin a three-game homestand.

Hired four years ago on Thanksgiving Day, Boudreau went 201-88-40 in the regular season with the Capitals but just 17-20 in the playoffs. This season he tried a new approach, emphasizing accountability and the willingness to bench his star players ? team captain Ovechkin included ? as punishment for subpar performances.

The Capitals started 7-0 ? a franchise record for consecutive wins to begin a season ? but have since slumped badly. They have lost six of eight, including a 5-1 beat-down Saturday night to a Buffalo Sabres team missing nine regular players. Ovechkin has only one goal in the last eight games.

The 51-year-old Hunter played for the Capitals from 1987-99, the last five seasons as team captain, and is one of four players to have his jersey (No. 32) retired by the franchise. He played 19 NHL seasons and is the only player in league history with 1,000 points and 3,000 penalty minutes. His career total of 3,563 penalty minutes ranks second all-time.

Hunter has coached the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League for 11 seasons, compiling a 451-189-23-24 record. He became the fastest coach in OHL history to reach 300 and 400 career wins.

Boudreau turned around a moribund franchise when he was hired in 2007, leading the Capitals to the first of four consecutive Southeast Division titles and winning the league's coach of the year award in 2008. Nicknamed "Gabby," he bought an offensive philosophy that meshed well with Ovechkin and the team's other "young guns" such as Alexander Semin and Mike Green, but he was never able to get Washington beyond the second round of the playoffs.

Boudreau had the team adopt a more defensive mindset during a losing streak last season, but it failed to pay dividends in the spring. The Capitals were swept by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the second round of the postseason.

Boudreau's assistant coaches ? Dean Evason, Bob Woods and Blaine Forsythe ? will remain in their posts under Hunter.

On Thanksgiving, space station astronauts don't have to watch their weight

The Thanksgiving menu for astronauts aboard the International Space Station includes turkey, yams, and cherry-blueberry cobbler, all served up ? or is it down? ? in a microgravity environment.?

A light Thanksgiving dinner doesn't necessarily mean skimping on the turkey or stuffing, not even aboard the International Space Station. The three crew members, who arrived just in time to spend a weightless holiday in orbit, will enjoy a feast of irradiated smoked turkey and heat-treated yams while floating 220 miles (354 kilometers) above Earth tomorrow (Nov. 24).

The?weightless feast?will include traditional favorites with a space-y twist, such as NASA's own cornbread dressing, home-style potatoes, cranberries, and for dessert ? drum roll! ? cherry-blueberry cobbler, served in a space pouch.

Around the table will be NASA astronaut Dan Burbank and Russian cosmonauts Anton Shkaplerov and Anatoly Ivanishin. The trio arrived at the space station Tuesday (Nov. 22), and they are scheduled to live and work aboard the outpost until March. Their time will be spent conducting experiments and preparing for the arrival of new commercial cargo-carrying spacecraft.

Burbank recently described the crew's Thanksgiving plans in a NASA holiday video message, with Burbank catching floating food packages as he gave Earthlings a rundown of the Thursday menu. [A Gallery of Space Food]

The one important missing ingredient? Family.

"We're going to be missing the family and friends back home; we're going to hopefully get a chance to talk to them," Burbank said.

Even so, the astronaut has a lot on his gratitude list.

"We're going to enjoy some great food, we're going to enjoy?a view of planet Earth from here, we're going to be real thankful for the opportunity that we have to fly aboard this magnificent space station, and we're going to be thankful for the love and support of all the folks that we have back home," Burbank said.

Even though the crew members won't be able to bow their heads in thanks with their families and friends, the feast will provide a reminder of home. "The food we eat in space tastes very much like the food we enjoy on Earth," a former space station occupant, NASA astronaut Clay Anderson, said from the ground.

The trickiest part of preparing a space Thanksgiving meal has to do with shelf life: Without any food refrigerators or freezers on the space station, food must last in room temperature for long periods of time, said NASA food scientist Vickie Kloeris, manager of the space station's food system. That's why they freeze-dry and thermostabilize the foods. Thermostabilizing involves pre-heating the food to kill bacteria.

Outdoing a meal with family and friends may be difficult, but the space station has something Grandma's house doesn't, and that's microgravity.

"It's totally legal to play with your food in outer space," Anderson told SPACE.com, adding that astronauts can spin the floating food on their spoon, which is "great fun." And Anderson would know. He spent 152 days living aboard the station in 2007, returning to the outpost in 2010 as a member of space shuttle mission STS-131.

During his stays, he said, he ate all of the foods being served at Thanksgiving, though he wasn't on the station for turkey day or?Christmas in space.

The astronauts may wind up in the same?turkey coma?as people on Earth. Anderson said that even in microgravity it's tempting to stuff yourself. "I ate like a pig when I was there," he said, "and I still lost weight."

Video: New look at spectacular crash

>>> as you watch this, please remember while it is arresting to see, the pilot was okay. no one on the ground was hurt. the chopper was going to lower a christmas display on a public plaza on the water. pay close attention to a man working on the ground holding onto a cable leading to the chopper. he tries to flip it to a better position and it sounds like a riffle shot when the chopper goes down. at first you can see the pilot seemingly lifeless hand on the passenger seat but after he regains consciousness, he walks away with assistance. now after the trauma he said he has no memory of the incident. but he's okay.

Russia secures ownership of Belarus gas pipelines (AP)

MOSCOW ? Russia's state-controlled natural gas company bought the remaining stake in Belarus' gas pipeline system Friday to become its sole owner in a move that strengthens Moscow's control over gas exports to the West.

Russia is the main ally and sponsor of Belarus' authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko, but he had been reluctant to yield control over the pipeline network and other Belarusian economic assets in the past, accusing Russia of trying to erode his nation's sovereignty.

Lukashenko's stance, however, has been softened recently by a severe economic crisis that has weakened his power and made him more prone to compromise.

Russia's Gazprom already had owned 50 percent in Belarus' pipeline operator, Beltransgaz, and wanted to gain full control. It said in a statement after the signing that it agreed to pay $2.5 billion for the remaining 50 percent stake.

Russia provides about a quarter of the natural gas that Europe consumes, with 80 percent of it going through Ukraine. The rest is shipped through Belarus and Turkey.

Moscow has sought to win control of existing transit routes and build new export pipelines bypassing its neighbors in order to secure its hold on energy supplies to Europe, its main export market.

Past pricing disputes between Ukraine and Belarus have led to disruptions in energy supplies to customers in the European Union, prompting EU nations to intensify a search for alternative supply routes.

Russian Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko said after the signing Friday that the deal has brought an end to the energy wars between Russia and Belarus.

As part of the deal, Russia has also reduced the price of gas it sells to Belarus. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Friday that Gazprom will now charge Belarus $164 per 1,000 cubic meters of gas in the first quarter of next year, down from the $280 per 1,000 cubic meters it was paying in the third quarter of this year. The gas price for Gazprom customers in Europe hovers around $400 per 1,000 cubic meters .

"We are making a significant discount for our Belarusian friends and partners," Putin said. He added that Russia also agreed to restructure Belarus' debt for previous supplies.

The low gas price is essential for the Belarusian economy, most of which has remained in state hands. Belarus has been hit by its worst financial crisis since the 1991 fall of the Soviet Union, which has led to sharp devaluation of the national currency and triggered high inflation that has eroded public savings.

"Cheap gas and oil are like drugs for the Soviet-style Belarusian economy," said Alexander Klaskovsky, an independent analyst in the Belarusian capital, Minsk. "It's a lifebelt for Lukashenko who has driven the country into a deep crisis and 100 percent inflation."

Belarus' first post-Soviet leader, Stanislav Shushkevich, said that surrendering control of the pipelines "will mean the loss of a significant part of Belarus' sovereignty."

He described the gas deal with Belarus as part of efforts by Putin, who is all but certain to reclaim the Russian presidency in March's vote, to create a new, stronger alliance of ex-Soviet nations.

Putin, who has lamented the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union, has recently proposed forming a "Eurasian Union" of former Soviet nations, saying the bloc could become a major global player competing for influence with the United States, the European Union and Asia.

"Putin is going to the vote with a geopolitical plan of a new empire, and he's ready to pay the devil or Lukashenko to achieve that," Shushkevich told The Associated Press.

Putin said Friday that Moscow will also provide Belarus with a $10 billion loan that will be spread over the next decade to help it pay for a nuclear power plant that will be built by Russia.
