Panamanian Gabriel G?mez upgrades Philadelphia Union midfield

The Philadelphia Union upgraded its midfield Wednesday with the signing of Panamanian Gabriel G?mez, who was a key figure in his country?s run to the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals.

G?mez, 27, joins the Union from Mexican second division club Indios de Ciudad Ju?rez. He battled injury during the fall season but still had three goals in eight games as Indios finished 13th out of 16 teams.

He also has played professionally in his native country, Colombia, Portugal and Cyprus.

Terms of his contract with Philadelphia weren?t disclosed.

G?mez has been capped 74 times by Panama and scored twice at last summer?s Gold Cup, including on a penalty kick in the 2-1 group stage upset of the U.S.
