Cyril: Dad! I'm here.Given that the month of March was packed with an unusual amount of high budget, blockbuster films, I figured I would balance things out with a couple of independent/arthouse features as well. One of these was The Kid with a Bike, a Belgian film from the Dardenne brothers (Jean-Pierre and Luc). This film follows a young boy dealing with being abandoned by his father and attempting to forge new relationships with other potential role models and caretakers. The film is very naturalistic, a key type of style when it comes to the Dardenne's work, as it plays out as more character-driven, as opposed to story-driven and plays around a lot with ambiguity, despite straddling a somewhat familiar path. With that in mind, the film is very good, well-acted, and filled with moments that evoke emotion as well as thoughts based around developing more of an understanding for one's self, rather than letting the film tell you what to think.read the whole review at thecodeiszeek.com

Objective:The death rate of ovarian cancer is the highest in the Gynecology tumor.The difficulty to cure ovarian cancer is correlated with unclear symptom during early stage and metastasis during later stage,as well as unlear mechanism of generation and development.So it is the vital important to know the biologic activity clearly and evaluate the state of its generation and development.It is well known that apoptosis and angiogenesis play an important role in the process of generation and development of ovarian cancer.Many genic proteins about apoptosis and angiogenesis have been discoveried recently,such as:p53, p21, bcl-2, c-myc, VEGF, MVD etc.Now new-discoveried genic protein ?-survivin and HIF-1? become the issue to study carcinoma.To indentify survivin and HIF-1? in the mechanism of generation and development of ovarian cancer and relationship with apoptosis and angiogenesis in carcinoma,we investigate the expression of survivin and HIF-1? in ovarian cancer, ovarian benign tumor and ovarian normal tissue as well as the relationship with stage, grade, histological type of ovarian cancer.Materials and methods:(1) The expression of survivin and HIF-1? protein was studied by Flow Cytometry and Immunfluorescense in<WP=8>49 cases of ovarian cancer ,32 cases of benign tumor,and 13 cases of normal tissues for controls.FIGO stage?-? were retrieved from our files, including 11cases of stage ?,17cases of ?, 19cases of?,and 2 cases of ?.The mean age of patients was 46.5?8.5 years,and the mean age of 13 normal tissues was 44?8.2 years.(2)Every specimen was divided into two samples.One sample was fixed in nautral-buffered 4% Formalin and embedded in paraffin and then disagnoesd by the pathologist.The other sample was fixed in 70% alcohol and to be used to detect apoptosis rate.We took fluorescence index as the norm of survivin and HIF-1? protein quantitative expression.Results:(1) Expression of survivin, HIF-1?and apoptosis rate in different ovarian tissue:The expression of survivin and HIF-1?are different respectively,especial in ovarian cancer, P<0.01.The expression in ovarian cancer are both higher than that of benign and normal tissues, P<0.01.The apoptosis rates are different in different ovarian tissues, P<0.01, and the comparision of each other is different significantly,P<0.01.(2)The expressin of survivin and HIF-1?in different stage,grade,histological type of ovarian cancer:The expression of HIF-1?in the early stage of ovarian cancer is much higher than that of later stage , P<0.05. There are no significances among the expression of HIF-1? in different Grade and histological type.The expression of survivin in cervical endometrial-like adenocarcinoma is much higher than that of teratolarconoma and dysgerminoma P<0.05, but no difference with serous adecarcinoma and mucinous adenocarcinoma. The expression of survivin is no correlation with different grade and type, P>0.05.(3)The correlation coefficient was<WP=9>r=0.734 between survivin and HIF-1?,r=-0.479 between survivin and AP, r=0.753 between HIF-1? and VEGF in ovarian tumor, all P<0.01.Conclusions: The quantitative expression of survivin and HIF-1?in ovarian cancer are much higher than in benign tumor and normal tissue, and much correlated with apoptosis rate and the expression of VEGF. These demonstrate that survivin and HIF-1?are much related to the apoptosis and angiogenesis of ovarian tumor, as well as play an very important role in the mechanism of generation and development of ovarian tumor. Survivin and HIF-1? may be to become the promising tumor marker and aim of gene treatment.

Aren't the clamps for ground glass called "keck clips" or something like that? I'm talking about the little plastic clamps that hold ground glass joints together so they don't fall apart while working. I believe that product came out in the mid 80s a bit too late for my lab time in the early 90s. A fellow o-chem student had a nice small lab fire due to the lab not having those new-fangled keck clips available (no injury or property damage, thankfully). I think there is a realistic safety advantage by being able to print up the exact safety gear you need, whenever you need it. That might be another valid chem lab market. Not having the proper clamps and such is no excuse if you can just print another.
I also think it would be fun to 3-d print microscale apparatus, because at least its small and cheap and fast. Didn't read the article, maybe thats the scale they're talking about.

Brad Pitt And Angelina Jolie: A Timeline Of Their Love
We take a look back at the seven-year relationship between two of the world's biggest movie stars.

That noise you just heard was the heads of celebrity tabloid editors' heads exploding in unison at the news that Brad Pitt finally put a ring on it and proposed to Angelina Jolie.
Rumors of an engagement began to swirl when Jolie was spotted at a private viewing at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's Chinese galleries on Wednesday rocking quite a sparkler on her ring finger. Pitt's manager Cynthia Pett-Dante confirmed the engagement to People, saying, "It is a promise for the future and their kids are very happy."
The pair have been together for seven years and have six children. Their love story has been documented like crazy by the tabloids, but in honor of their long-overdue engagement, we decided to take a look back at the highlights of their relationship to show you how they got from meeting on a movie set to preparing to walk down the aisle.
» Summer 2004: Pitt and Jolie meet on the set of "Mr. & Mrs. Smith." Rumors of an on-set romance begin almost immediately, though both deny the allegations, saying they are just friends.
» January 2005: Pitt and then-wife Jennifer Aniston announce that they have decided to formally separate after nearly five years of marriage and more than seven years together.
» March 2005: Aniston files for divorce, citing "irreconcilable differences."
» April 2005: Paparazzi photos of Pitt, Jolie and her adopted son Maddox on a beach in Kenya surface, seeming to confirm long-standing rumors that the pair are a romantic item.
» July 2005: Pitt and Jolie pose for a photo shoot for W magazine entitled "Domestic Bliss," portraying them as a family with several children. Though rumors that they were a serious item had reached a fever pitch, they continued to refuse to confirm anything. Following the paparazzi images of the couple together in Kenya, many considered the shoot a major affront to Aniston, as her divorce from Pitt had not yet been finalized.
» July 6, 2005: Jolie adopts her second child, 6-month-old daughter Zahara Marley, from an orphanage in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
» October 2, 2005: Pitt and Aniston's divorce is finalized by the Los Angeles Superior Court.
» January 11, 2006: Jolie confirms to People that she is pregnant with her first child with Pitt.
» January 19, 2006: A judge grants Jolie's request to legally change the last names of her adopted children from Jolie to Jolie-Pitt. Pitt's legal adoption of both Maddox and Zahara was granted soon after.
» May 27, 2006: Jolie gives birth to the couple's first biological child, daughter Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, in Swakopmund, Namibia. Shiloh's first pictures were sold exclusively to People and OK for $4.1 million and $3.5 million, respectively, and all of the cash was donated to charities benefiting African children.
» October 2006: Voicing his support for same-sex couples seeking equal marriage rights, Pitt tells Esquire magazine that he and Jolie would marry "when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able."
» March 15, 2007: Jolie adopts 3-year-old Pax Thien from an orphanage in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Because Vietnam's adoption regulations do not allow unmarried couples to co-adopt, Jolie adopted Pax as a single parent, but filed a request to legally change her son's surname from Jolie to Jolie-Pitt a month later.
» May 2008: After much speculation, while promoting "Kung Fu Panda" at the Cannes Film Festival, Jolie confirms that she and Pitt are expecting twins.
» July 12, 2008: Jolie gives birth to a son, Knox Léon, and a daughter, Vivienne Marcheline, in Nice, France. As they did following Shiloh's birth, Pitt and Jolie sold the rights for the first images of the twins jointly to People and Hello! for $14 million (the most expensive celebrity pictures ever taken) with proceeds going to their Jolie-Pitt Foundation.
» October 15, 2008: Jolie ignites controversy after telling The New York Times that she is excited for her children to see "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" because "not a lot of people get to see a movie where their parents fell in love." Both Pitt and Jolie had long maintained that while there was chemistry on the set of "Smith," Pitt did not cheat on Aniston during production and began his relationship with Jolie after they'd separated.
» November 2008: In an interview with Vogue, Jennifer Aniston says that Jolie's comment to the NYT that she and Pitt fell in love on the set of "Smith" was "uncool." "I felt those details were a little inappropriate to discuss," Aniston said. "That stuff about how she couldn't wait to get to work every day? That was really uncool."
» July 5, 2011: Praising New York on passing marriage equality legislation, Pitt reaffirmed to People that he and Jolie will not marry until all Americans are afforded marriage rights.
» September 2011: Pitt finds himself embroiled in controversy after telling Parade, "I wasn't living an interesting life myself. I think that my marriage had something to do with it. Trying to pretend the marriage was something that it wasn't." This was, as usual, scooped up by the tabloids as if he were hurling an insult at Aniston, and much of his "Moneyball" press tour was spent explaining that he was simply at a bad place in his life near the end of his marriage and that his relationship with Jolie reinvigorated him.
» December 2011: Promoting her directorial debut "In the Land of Blood and Honey," Jolie tells Christiane Amanpour that her kids were pressing her to get married. "The kids asked me the other day, and I asked them if it was just because they wanted to have a 'big cake,' " Jolie said. "They see movies that have the people getting married in the movies ... you know, the happily ever after. Shrek and Fiona are married. ... We've explained to them that our commitment when we decided to start a family was the greatest commitment you could possibly have. Once you have six children, you're committed."
» January 2012: Pitt co-signed Jolie's statement that their children were pushing them down the aisle. "We'd actually like to," he told The Hollywood Reporter of marrying Jolie, "and it seems to mean more and more to our kids. We made this declaration some time ago that we weren't going to do it till everyone can. But I don't think we'll be able to hold out. It means so much to my kids, and they ask a lot. And it means something to me, too, to make that kind of commitment."

Police close investigation into Houston's death

Whitney Houston can finally rest in peace. Beverly Hills police have closed their investigation into her death--the last piece of lingering red tape from her Feb. 11 passing.
And despite drugs playing a key part in her death, the cops have declined to file any charges.

The department cited the coroner's final determination that the music legend accidentally drowned in the bathtub of her suite at the Beverly Hilton Hotel with traces of cocaine in her system. Coroner officials did say that investigators found traces of a powdery substance in the room, but there was apparently no indication it belonged to anyone other than Houston.
According to its own report, Beverly Hills police determined that Houston may have been "possibly overdosed on a narcotic substance, prescription medications, over the counter medications and alcohol."
"Based on the findings of our investigation and our review of the Coroner's Report we have determined that this is not a criminal matter. The BHPD investigation has been officially closed," the department said in a statement, which also extended its condolences to Whitney's family, friends and fans.

McKesson and Akami: Clarification of Legal Standards for Joint ...
Overview
The Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit will focus on the legal standard for joint infringement in the forthcoming McKesson and Akami opinions.? Because of software?s inexorable transition from computer-readable media to network and internet distribution, these opinions significantly affect joint infringement for software inventions.
McKesson Technologies Inc. v. Epic Systems Corp., (Fed. Cir. 2011) focuses on two questions, as ordained by the en banc order:
1. If separate entities each perform separate steps of a method claim, under what circumstances, if any, would either entity or any third party be liable for inducing infringement or for contributory infringement?
2. Does the nature of the relationship between the relevant actors?e.g., service provider/user; doctor/patient?affect the question of direct or indirect infringement liability?
Akamai Technologies, Inc. v. Limelight Networks, Inc., (Fed. Cir. 2011) paraphrased McKesson?s questions in its single en banc order question:
1. If separate entities each perform separate steps of a method claim, under what circumstances would that claim be directly infringed and to what extent would each of the parties be liable?

At issue in Akamai is Akamai?s Patent No. 6108703 (??703?), which uses the term ?tagging? to describe prepending a URL, as suggested by Limelight?s brief: ?www.provider.com/?/story.gif? may become ?ghost1467.com/www.provider.com/?/story.gif?.? Limelight infringes every step but one of ?703 by hosting the content and providing an alternate server name to its customers; the customers perform the final step by prepending the server name onto the URL.
Arguing for Akamai, Mr. Dunner?s oral argument proposed three tests:
?One test is direction or control, not ?and control,? ?or control.?? The second test is concert of action.? The third test is knowingly combining steps with another.? So there are three separate tests, and in each case, there has to be knowledge of what is happening.?
Arguing for Limelight, Mr. Panner cited ? 271?s sharp distinction between ? 271(a)?s establishment of patent infringement as a strict liability tort, and that knowledge of infringement is required for indirect infringement under ? 271(b) or ? 271(c).
Judge Newman was clearly uncomfortable with this strict reading of ? 271 to Limelight?s admitted desire for the customer to perform the final step.? Judge Lourie also indicated discomfort with this outcome.? However, this is exactly the arm?s length transaction contemplated by Judge Rader in BMC: ?This court acknowledges that the standard requiring control or direction for a finding of joint infringement may in some circumstances allow parties to enter into arms-length agreements to avoid infringement.?? (498 F.3d at 1381.)? Indeed, that Limelight intended the result and that this portion of Limelight?s website seems to have no substantial noninfringing use (to borrow language from ? 271(c)) seems to imply some degree of inequity.

At issue in McKesson is McKesson Patent No. 6,757,898 (??898?), which covers a method of communication between a patient and a healthcare provider.? Defendant Epic?s software ?MyChart? infringes every step of the method claim except for the first step: ?initiating a communication by one of the plurality of users to the provider for information . . . .?
Mr. Joseffer restated the BMC ?direction-or-control? test McKesson advanced in its brief.? He was immediately peppered with questions about his assertion that McKesson can prevail under either ? 271 (a) or (b) (where ? 271 (b) inducement generally requires direct infringement under ? 271 (a)), but he clarified that the direction-or-control test broadens legal attribution to cover either (a) or (b).
Judge Dyk inquired about whether this method patent could be enforceable if it had been written entirely from the perspective of the doctor.? Mr. Joseffer replied that such a patent could be circumvented if the doctor asked someone in IT to perform at least one step, and explained that requiring a claim construction solution would expand multi-step method claims to an unworkable number of party subcombinations, and that no such construction could be expected to anticipate every possible scenario.
Arguing for Epic, Mr. Moore held to the Supreme Court?s decision in Aro (previously cited against Mr. Joseffer by Judge Moore), which requires performing all steps of a method patent to satisfy ? 271 (a) infringement.? Mr. Moore went on to explain that ? 271 (b) and (c) were created to encompass negligent or intentional acts by secondary or tertiary parties, and that statutory construction interprets their separation to preclude multiple party inducement under (a).
