Ken Abney takes tarpon crown at Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo | NOLA.com

When New Orleans angler Ken Abney took the lead early on the second day of the 89th Grand Isle International Tarpon Rodeo with a 124-pound, 6-ounce beauty, his friends probably wondered if that catch would hold up. After all, Abney's catch was only the second tarpon brought to the scales, and there was still almost two days of fishing left.

They had nothing to worry about.

With the Gulf still heaving from the effects of Tropical Strom Don on Saturday morning, few anglers were able to fish offshore, and only one other tarpon was weighed in.

When the scales closed, Abney had the coveted trophy as champion of the Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo tarpon division.

Patrick Cenac of Houma was second with the 99-pound, 5-ounce fish that was also the first weighed in this year. Tommy Hebert, another Houma angler, had the third-place, and last, tarpon of the event, a 69-pound, 4-ouncer.

The slim tarpon returns reflected generally poor results across the glamour big-game division.

"Conditions were still rough Saturday morning, and I think a lot of guys who got beat up in the really bad stuff Friday just said, 'The heck with this,' and stayed in," said weighmaster Marty Bourgeois. "Conditions really laid down late in the afternoon, but by then decisions had been made."

Bourgeois said overall returns from across the coastal and inshore divisions were also lower than normal.
