What are the nation's healthiest, fittest metropolitan areas and why?
Every year since 2007 the American College of Sports Medicine has produced the American Fitness Index, an evidence and science based measurement of the state of health and fitness at the community level throughout the US.
This year?s winner is Minneapolis-St Paul which edged out last year?s winner Washington DC thanks to the Twin Cities reduction in smokers and improvements in healthy behavior measures.???
Cities ranked near the top are considered to have strong community fitness (which corresponds to individuals being fit) and many factors which support this lifestyle whilst having few that hinder.
The report includes health indicators such as the percentage of people who exercise regularly, maintain a healthy weight, eat the recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables, have access to health care, have health insurance, and don't smoke.
Environmental factors included the availability of parks, walking/bike trails, and public transportation.
The latest AFI? takes the 50 most populated metropolitan areas and ranks them based on data and scientific methodologies to compile a list that is aimed at helping communities and organizations help improve health and fitness in line with their Guiding Principles for Healthy Communities according top the American Fitness Index:
"- Overall health improvements in U.S. cities must focus on the prevention of behavior-linked diseases by effectively addressing the underlying risk and community factors.
- ?The rise in chronic diseases attributable to physical inactivity and unhealthy diets are a "clear and present danger" to our health and healthcare systems, our cities, our nation, and our future."
- All cities in the U.S., irrespective of size or current health status, can make powerful advances in improving the health of their people through simple, affordable, effective steps.
There is a need for even more synergy and collaboration to assist U.S. cities in actively making the move toward better health."
